World War II a group of five to Australian Infantryman WX901 Pte.E.Millet 1939-45 Medal, Defence Medal, Australia Service Medal, 1939-45 Star and Africa Star. NEF to EF. Pte. Millet was killed in action at the Battle of Crete (second day) 21/5/1941, Pte.Millet took part in Wavell's first desert campaign in December 1940/Feb 1941,and in the Battle of Bardia before helping to capture Tobruk. He is buried at Suda Bay War Cemetery 5.C.15., World War II, along with New Zealand Infantry a casualty group of five, awarded to 9179 L/Cpl G.W.Wheeler comprising 1939/45 Star, Africa Star, 1939/1945 War Medal, New Zealand War Service Medal and New Zealand Memorial Cross, all privately engraved, EF. Rowing Medals to W.J.Fernie (2) University CambridgeTrial Eights Winning Crew 1895 , 51mm diameter in silver by D.Munsey/Peters of Cambridge, in half lunette-style presentation holder , boxed, with old white toning, suggesting once fully encased, the case with a shield-shaped plaque with inscription of the crew, and weights of the crew, and positions in the boat. W.J.Fernie is shown as Stroke position. The final elimination trial for rowers for entrance into the Cambridge Boat Race Crew for the historic University Boat Race. This is the only time prior to the Boat Race that the crews race over the full 4 1/4 mile Putney to Mortlake course. These race were contested intra-University Oxford v. Oxford and Cambridge v. Cambridge to decide the final crews. The Race still takes place today, although the medal prize has been replaced by the award of sponsored clothing and equipment to the competitors. Head of the River - Trinity Hall 51mm diameter in silver, by D.Munsey of Cambridge, in lunette-style presentation holder, boxed, with old white toning, the case with a shield-shaped plaque with inscription of the crew and their respective positions in the boat. ScotlandBank of Scotland5 Pounds Stanley Curister ESSAY undated 21st January 1945 similar design to Pick 97 (Calloway-Murphy BA 102b) serial number 8/Q 4233 signatures Lord Elphinstone for Governor and Crawford for Treasurer black SPECIMENoverprint diagonally at centre. The note features a grey Scotia medallion at centre, Great Seal of Scotland, Arms with unicorns at left on obverse and reverse in Dark Grey featuring Arms at centre and value at centre left and right. In 1943 the Bank started to consider redesigning the £5 note. A committee was set up with a brief to examine ways of reducing the size of the £5 note and adding a printed reverse. Stanley Curister, the Curator of the National Gallery at the time, prepared designs for the printed reverse featuring the Bank's shield against a lined background which was approved in May 1944 after several variants were submitted experimenting with different coloured inks. The inks were produced by A B Fleming & Co Ltd, the long standing ink manufacturers for the Bank. A number of these essays have come on to the market, all in the reduced dimensions. In 1943, ahead of the Bank's 250th Anniversary in 1945, the Bank started to consider redesigning the 1 Pound note therefore a committee was set up. The notes in this lot include the old and the new design where the new design no longer features a side panel with the banks arms and arms now on reverse against a lined background.

World War II group of four to Flight Sergeant Dennis Axtell RCAF 51 and 77 Squadron, comprising Distinguished Flying Medal, 1939-1945 Star, Air Crew Europe Star and 1939-1945 Medal, EF to UNC, Dennis Axtell was killed in action on 26/3/1943 just three days after being put forward for the DFM, when his aircraft was shot down and he and five of his crew were killed. He is buried at the Maucourt French National Cemetery. Comes with photocopies of documents relating to flights and also details of the crew on the final flight

World War I and World War II a group of nine to Lieut. (E) Joseph William Brand R.N, HMS Gossamer 1914-1915 Star, World War I War Medal, World War I Victory Medal, 1939-1945 Star, Atlantic Star, 1939-1945 Defence Medal, 1939-1945 World War II Medal, Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, and Distinguished Service Cross, George VI (1942), EF in presentation box, comes with photograph and copies of papers detailing the HMS Gossamer and details of the naval career of Joseph William Brand. The HMS Gosamer was a minesweeper of the Halcyon class. At the evacuation from Dunkirk Gossamer made six trips to and from that port or the beaches and brought home 3200 men. In April 1942 the Gossamer left Murmansk with two other ships of her flotilla to assist the cruiser Edinburgh which had been torpedoed. Gossamer rescued 440 survivors. Gossamer remained in North Russia and on June 24 1942 was sunk by a direct bomb during an air attack.
