Franco-British Exhibition medal 1908 51mm diameter in 9 carat gold, by F. Bowcher, Obverse: A winged female figure of Peace encourages the alliance between Britain and France, seated facing one another, LONDON MDCCCCVIII, Reverse: A female figure standing right, her arm aloft, regards a plaque(with recipient's name J.CAMPBELL BROWN. D.Sc.L.L.D.) with exhibition buildings beyond FRANCO BRITISH EXHIBITION. 69.16 grammes, Eimer 1903b, BHM 3960, UNC with matt finish, in the P. Vaughton & Sons red box of issue. Cataloguers note: The exhibition was held on a newly-prepared site at White City, West London. Others to be held there and for which medals were awarded, include the Japan-British Exhibition in 1910, and the Anglo-American Exhibition in 1914. James Campbell Brown was born in Aberdeen. His father George Brown worked as a chemical manufacturer in London at Bow Common Alum Works. Brown was educated at the Old Aberdeen Gymnasium under Dr. Alexander Anderson, then at the Marischal College. In 1863 he joined the Royal College of Chemistry, London. He graduated with a BSc in 1867 and received a University scholarship leading to a doctorate in 1870. He taught Chemistry at Aberdeen and then went on to lecture at the Liverpool Royal Infirmary School of Medicine. He also taught at the School of Medicine in Liverpool. Campbell was involved in the creation of the University of Liverpool. He was also involved in water quality studies for the City of Liverpool Water Works. As a specialist also on forensic chemistry he was often called as an expert in court cases. He died in 1910, and after his death his book 'History of Chemistry From The Earliest Times' was published.

Coronation of Edward VII 1902 31mm diameter in silver, The Official Royal Mint issue, by G.W. de Saulles, Eimer 1871, BHM 3737, 12.69 grammes, UNC or very near so with some contact marks, in a red box with 'Mansion House', CORONATION YEAR 1902. Right Hon.Sir. J.C. Dimsdale, Bart., M.P., Lord Mayor' in gold lettering on the lid. J.C. Dimsdale was knighted in 1894, in commemoration of the opening of Tower Bridge. He was Lord Mayor of London at the time of the Coronation, and in 1902 he carried the Crystal Sceptre of the City of London in front of King Edward VII at his Coronation. The 1902 Coronation Honours list was released on the intended coronation day on 26 June 1902, and announced that Dimsdale would receive a baronetcy. He was created Baronet, of Goldsmiths, Langdon Hills, in the County of Essex and of Lancaster Street in the Borough of Paddington in the County of London. In June 1902 he received the 2nd class of the Japanese Order of the Rising Sun from Prince Komatsu Akihito, who was received formally at Mansion House as part of his visit to the United Kingdom to attend the coronation. An interesting piece of Royalty-related history.

Made by the Nagai Medal Company VF with pin on reverse, along with a further group of Japanese Fire Brigade Badges (5) includes merit and Long Service badges, mostly 1930s issues one with red enamelling, another with green enamelling, these in the wooden boxes of issue, Japan Order of the Rising Sun 7th Class in silver with both sides enamelled, with ribbon, hook and eye, EF boxed, Order of the Rising Sun 8th Class in silver (3) NEF to EF boxed, The order is awarded to those who have made distinguished achievements in the following fields: international relations, promotion of Japanese culture, advancements in their field, development in welfare or preservation of the environment. Prior to the end of the Second World War, it was also awarded for exemplary military service. Beginning in 2003, the two lowest rankings (7th and 8th classes) for the Order of the Rising Sun were abolished, with the highest degree becoming a separate order known as the Order of the Paulownia Flowers, with the single rank of Grand Cordon. While it is the third highest order bestowed by the Japanese government, it is however generally the highest ordinarily conferred order. Captain Oliver Gordon MVO RN First World War trio (as Lieutenant, Star to Sub-Lieutenant) and Member of the Victoria Order, World War II (4) War Medal, Atlantic Star, Pacific Star and 1939-45 star, in box of issue with original ribbons, also military epaulettes, Captain Oliver Gordon was Captain of HMS Exeter, a heavy cruiser, during World War II during which she was sunk in the Battle of the Java Sea March 1 1942. The lot includes the Book `Fight It Out` written by Captain Gordon in 1957 describing the epic encounter against overwhelming odds during the battle in 1942. He was taken Prisoner of War along with the survivors by the Japanese after the ship was sunk in the battle. The lot also includes many Christmas Greetings received by Captain Gordon during his time as a POW. Between the two World Wars he served on the Royal Yacht Victoria and Albert and the lot includes photographs of Captain Gordon, some with King George V and Queen Alexandra, also letters from Buckingham Palace one signed by King George VI, a restricted letter from Mountbatten of Burma, a letter from the Imperial War Museum, photographs of crew and ships, along with a copy of a newspaper cutting reporting Captain Gordon`s death. Also included is the paperwork details and letters relating to the Companion of the Order of the Bath, though this has been retained by Captain Gordon`s family
