Solander first accompanied Joseph Banks on James Cook's voyage around the world. He also went with Banks to Iceland in 1772. In 1773 he became keeper of the Natural History department in the British Museum. The medal was struck at the Swedish Royal Mint in 1783 and dedicated to Joseph Banks by Klas and Johann Alstrӧmer. Banks's grandfather Jacob Bancks was Swedish and became a naturalised Englishman serving as a naval officer and as an M.P. for Minehead
