Cataloguers note: The exhibition was held on a newly-prepared site at White City, West London. Others to be held there and for which medals were awarded, include the Japan-British Exhibition in 1910, and the Anglo-American Exhibition in 1914. James Campbell Brown was born in Aberdeen. His father George Brown worked as a chemical manufacturer in London at Bow Common Alum Works. Brown was educated at the Old Aberdeen Gymnasium under Dr. Alexander Anderson, then at the Marischal College. In 1863 he joined the Royal College of Chemistry, London. He graduated with a BSc in 1867 and received a University scholarship leading to a doctorate in 1870. He taught Chemistry at Aberdeen and then went on to lecture at the Liverpool Royal Infirmary School of Medicine. He also taught at the School of Medicine in Liverpool. Campbell was involved in the creation of the University of Liverpool. He was also involved in water quality studies for the City of Liverpool Water Works. As a specialist also on forensic chemistry he was often called as an expert in court cases. He died in 1910, and after his death his book 'History of Chemistry From The Earliest Times' was published.

France - Ardennes - Sedan region Jeton 1644 Manufacture of Dijonval, 37mm diameter octagonal in silver, 20.62 grammes, Reverse: a draped female figure seated to the left, on bundles of woollen cloth, on one reads LAINE D'ESPAGNE (Spanish Wool). Her right hand rests upon the handle of a bladed tool with the blade touching the ground, her left hand holding a skein of wool placed on her knee, in the left field the front of a galloping horse, with a seascape behind with three ships under sail. In exergue: MANUFACTURE PAIGNON / ETABLIE EN 1644. The obverse a large ornate P within a wreath of oak leaves and olive branches Near EF with attractive peripheral golden toning. Our research has found that the copper version is listed as rare, and that a silver example exists in the Museum of Ardenne in Charleville-Mezieres. A most interesting piece of French pre-industrial heritage. Cataloguers Note: Cloth-making has taken place in Sedan since the 16th Century and developed under the influence of Protestant refugees. The Dijonval factory near Sedan was created in 1646 by Nicolas Cadeau, and until 1666 they were the only manufacturers of fine sheets in France. In 1711 Dijonval was bought by Paignon who expanded the factory that would continue to be used until the 20th Century. In it's heyday in the 18th Century, the factory employed around 14,000 people, including 10,000 in the countryside weaving and spinning wool.

James Houston 1/5th Battalion (City of London) London Regiment (London Rifle Brigade) EF and Victory Medal to 4367 Cpl J.Houston EF, comes with internet research, showing 'Missing in action 28th March 1918'. The research shows the citation for James who was awarded the Military Medal on 16/8/1917 for Polygon Wood, after he took charge of his platoon after the platoon commander was killed. On 28th March the enemy attacked 'C' Company with an intense bombardment and the Battalion strength was reduced from 23 officers and 564 o/ranks, to 8 officers and 60 o/ranks. He is listed at the Commonwealth War Grave at Arras Memorial, France. Also World War II War Medal and Defence medal pair EF in a box with label Capt. W.E.P Tuddenham, and an assortment of cap badges, badges, a small hinged box containing two Edwardian stamps, a compass a sextant, a Military button and a worn Victorian Halfpenny. Duncan enlisted 10/10/1940, was sent to Egypt with PretoriaRegiment in April 1943, to 22nd Field Regiment, May 1943, to Italy in May 1944, and hospitalised, cause unknown, May 1944, and evacuated to South Africa . He was discharged on 2/1/1947., along with World War I to Welsh Regiments (4) 1914-15 Star awarded to 19532 Pte.W.Roberts 1st Royal Welsh Fusiliers. EF. Pte.Roberts was killed in action in France 3/9/1916 and is buried at Thiepval Memorial. Pier and Face 4A, World War I Medals (3) the first awarded to 11085 Pte.G.Jones, South Wales Borderers, NEF. Resolution and Adventure Medal 1772 Eimer 744a 43mm diameter in copper showing the distinctive die break to the left of the exergue. Obverse Bust of George III laureate. GEORGE III. KING. OF. GR. BRITAIN. FRANCE. AND. IRELAND ETC. Reverse Two Ships at sea RESOLVTION ADVENTURE. Exergue. SAILED . FROM. ENGLAND MARCH MDCCLXXII Fine for wear, with corroded surfaces as is normal on this issue, and showing the mount mark at the top as do all examples. Eimer states:- 'The medal was commissioned by naturalist and benefactor Joseph Banks (1743-1820) who was to have accompanied Captain James Cook on his second voyage (1728-1729) but withdrew at a late stage. These medals were distributed at more than 30 places and generally show up in a worn and weathered state. 2000 medals are said to have been produced made from an alloy of copper, lead, zinc and tin. A further 142 example were struck in silver and 2 in gold. All examples appear to have been struck from a cracked die, as does this example.' Only a handful of examples have been discovered, mainly in New Zealand. Examples are held in the collections of Te Papa and the National Museum of Australia. A truly rare piece.
