World Coins One 1866 Penal Colony Token Coinage KM#Tn2, in an NGC holder and graded MS62 BN, noted by ' Coins' by Remick/James/Dowle/Finn as being 'the rt British Commonwealth coins' and records only 5 examples having been sold between the publications of the second and third editions between 1969 and 1971. London Coins Auction A156 5/6/2017 sold an 1866 example, Lot 1049, described as 'EF silvered' for £12,000 hammer price, more recently an example in NGC AU55 BN realised HK$ 220,000 this the more common 1861. The piece offered here (1866) is certified by NGC and graded MS62 BN, one of only 3 examples graded by NGC and by far the , the other two examples being graded as AU58 and AU55. NGC have graded 5 examples of the 1861 coin the finest being graded AU55, so not only is this the finest known 1866, but also the finest coin spanning both issues of this series. We also note no examples dated 1866 have been graded by PCGS, so this piece stands alone as the only MS graded example. So If you are a collector of high grade rarities of which only very small quantities are known to exist, then this is the coin for you. A true one of a kind super-rarity.
