Medals - Ardennes - Sedan region 1644 Manufacture of Dijonval, 37mm diameter octagonal in silver, 20.62 grammes, Reverse: a draped female figure seated to the left, on bundles of woollen cloth, on one reads LAINE D'ESPAGNE ( Wool). Her right hand rests upon the handle of a bladed tool with the blade touching the ground, her left hand holding a skein of wool placed on her knee, in the left field the front of a galloping horse, with a seascape behind with three ships under sail. In exergue: MANUFACTURE PAIGNON / ETABLIE EN 1644. The obverse a large ornate P within a wreath of oak leaves and olive branches Near EF with attractive peripl golden toning. Our research has found that the copper version is listed as rare, and that a silver example exists in the Museum of Ardenne in Charleville-Mezieres. A most interesting piece of pre-indus heritage. Cataloguers Note: Cloth-ma has taken place in Sedan since the 16th Century and developed under the influence of refugees. The Dijonval factory near Sedan was created in 1646 by Nicolas Cadeau, and until 1666 they were the only manufacturers of fine sheets in France. In 1711 Dijonval was bought by Paignon who expanded the factory that would continue to be used until the 20th Century. In it's heyday in the 18th Century, the factory employed around 14,000 people, including 10,000 in the countryside weaving and spinning wool.

A very rare issue, we note an example sold in London Coins Auction A126 9/6/2006 Lot 534 described as 'Fine with some surface marks and spots' realised £460 hammer price, this example considerably superior. Cataloguers Note: In 1758 the Jamaica assembly passed an act which provided that some of the new milled money should be made lagal tender and have a fixed value. £100,000 was proposed and to distinguish the re-valued coins, they were countermarked with the initials of the reigning monarch, George II. This succeeded in raising the value of the to 6 Shillings and Eight Pence. All of the new money, stamped or not also passed at this rate. Home authorities, on receiving copies of the local act, repealed it and the Governor of Jamaica was censured for exceeding his powers. Only £12,000 of coinage was countermarked and the project was abandoned in 1759.
