LiverpoolShipwreck group of 8 medals to Captain Robert Capper, comprising Liverpool Shipwreck and Humane Society medals (2) in silver and gold, Spanish Life Saving Medals (one gold), a Lloyd's Medal for Saving Life, a Distinguished Service Cross, George V type, in silver, hallmarked, a Mercantile Marine medal, in bronze, RoyalNaval Reserve Decoration in silver, hallmarked, World War I 1914-1918 Medal. EF to GEF three with boxes. 'The Balmes' a cargo steamer of 3794 tons left Havana on 5/11/1913 bound for Cadiz and Barcelona, she had 103 passengers and 55 crew on board with a cargo of cotton and rum. A fire was discovered on board and an SOS was answered by Captain Capper of the 'Pannonia' which was bound for New York, arriving on the scene on Thursday, the day after the fire was discovered. The passengers were evacuated successfully. The ship then escorted the burning ship to Bermuda before resuming her journey to New York. During World War I, Captain Capper had been in command of S.S. Ausonia and was torpedoed 600 miles from the nearest port. 7 boats were launched, 5 survived the hazardous journey back to Liverpool. The DSC was awarded on 7/8/1918. The 1919 list shows him as a Captain employed with Dispersal Unit on the Territorial Force General List. He was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal by Army Order 217 in 1939. Iron Cross 1939, First Class, straight top to 3, with screw back, stamped KRETA 1941 and 25 on rear of medal, and stamped 20 on rear of screw-back, GVF. Note: The Norwegian Forces Museum has a uniform tunic sleeve with KRETA band. This was a German military decoration awarded to Wehrmacht servicemen who took part in the Battle of Crete between 20 and 27 May 1941. This was the first occasion where German paratroops were used en masse, the first mainly airborne invasion in military history, and also the first time the Allies made significant use of intelligence from decrypted German messages from the Enigma machine

Reference: Liverpool Shipwreck and Humane Society Annual Report January 1928 (pages 41,42 and 43) Good Fine, with numerous edge knocks, comes with a handwritten account of the incident, also with a note stating that the medal was purchased from the family of John Darlington, whose children used the disc to play Hopscotch. The suspension survived and has been reunited with the medal with a repair to the clasp

Army of India Medal, reverse short hyphen type, officially impressed naming, with Bhurtpoor clasp, awarded to Ensign T.G. Dundas 15th N.I. EF with some hairlines and some rub to the portrait. Thomas Graham Dundas arrived in Calcutta on October 4th 1825, and was entitled to Bhurtpoor prize money of 2381 Rupees (£238 sterling) which he did not claim in India. Comes with copy of India Office Library and Records stating record of service, date of commission of rank as Ensign 13th May 1825, and Lieutenant 19th Oct.1836, also List of services - Posted as Ensign to 15th N.I. 1825. Siege and Capture of Bhurtpore, Ensign 15th N.I. (India Medal). Transferred as Lieutenant to 4th Extra Regiment (became 72nd N.I) from 19th Oct.1826, after his marriage in 1832 to Margaret Maria Louisa, 3rd daughter of Edward Swift Broughton. After a period of furlough, from 10th September 1833, he failed to report for his return and subsequently resigned his commission on 3rd Feb. 1835.

AfricaGeneral Service Medal with Somaliland 1920 clasp, awarded to K.22834 C.Fitzsimmons, Sto. 1Cl. H.M.S. Ark Royal. NEF with some hairlines, comes with copy of service record, showing that he joined the Royal Navy in July 1914, for 12 years, as Stoker 2nd Class, advancing to Stoker 1st Class in March 1917. He was invalided from the service in April 1921. H.M.S. Ark Royal was a seaplane carrier.
Italy - Tuscany, Order of St. Joseph, Knight's Star in gold and enamel, 58mm x 38mm , gross weight 13.77 grammes, a six-armed cross, with ball finials with red-enamelled gold rays between each quadrant. Obverse: A figure of St. Joseph with UBIQUE SIMILITUS in a red enamelled border, Reverse: withy the inscription S J F 1807, NEF with some of the red enamel missing from the top of the medal below the crown suspension. The Order of Saint Joseph was instituted in 1807 by Ferdinand III, Grand Duke of Tuscany, (during his reign as Grand Duke of Wurzburg) and transformed in 1817 into a Tuscan Roman Catholic Dynastic Order. It is awarded for services towards Tuscan culture and civilisation and to the Grand Ducal Houses as a whole. The order was originally divided into civil and military categories, although these are now defunct. It is now divided into three levels: Knight's Grand Cross (30 members), Commander (60 members) and Knights (150 members). Sovereigns, Heads of State, and Princes of the Grand Ducal House and other Royal Houses, Cardinals of the Holy Roman Church and Tuscan Metropolitan Archbishops were excluded form the count. All members had to be Catholics and the number of women could not exceed fifty (excluding Princesses of the Grand Ducal and other Royal Houses, wives of Heads of State and Dames of the Order of Saint Stephen).

NEF with some light rub to the portrait and some deeper hairlines on the reverse causing a shallow depression in the field. Henry Kilby served in the Crimea with ships company drawn from the H.M.S. Gladiator with whom he had served in the Baltic Sea. He was also awarded the Crimea Medal as a Sergeant with bar Sebastopol. He was later awarded the Turkish Crimea medal (as Corporal)and the NavalLong Service and Good Conduct Medal having completed 21 Years Good Service
