Five Guineas 1693 S.3422 Obverse conjoined busts of joint monarchs right. GVLIELMVS ET MARIA DEI GRATIA. Reverse, crowned garnished square topped arms, lion of Nassau in centre. Edge year QVINTO in raised letters on edge, in a PCGS holder and graded MS62, with Prooflike and brilliant fields, a piece with remarkable eye appeal, the bust and reverse design lightly frosted, retaining much mint lustre, must surely be one of the finest known examples of this short series. At the time of writing, the PCGS Population report shows one example graded MS62+ and another at MS63 being the only finer examples. Across the entire William and Mary series combining all Five Guinea dates and varieties, only 4 examples have been graded higher by PCGS. and in August 2020 an example dated 1692 and graded MS63 by PCGS realised $384,000 in Heritage, and is now being offered for private treaty sale at $499,000, and we can tell you that that the difference in grade between MS62 and 63 is negligible. William and Mary were spouses who reigned over the kingdoms of England, Scotland and Ireland. They began their joint reign in February 1689 after they were offered the throne by the Convention Parliament. James II (Mary’s father) had fled the country and William and Mary occupied what was in effect a vacant throne. They were the first joint rulers in England for over 800 years, although Philip II and Mary I had appeared on English coinage together. Mary was to reign until her death from smallpox in December 1694 and William continued his rule alone, until his death in March 1702. The reign of William and Mary was brief and their coins are relatively scarce.

These were the last issues for this design and introduced the word 'STERLING' below denomination at centre obverse and the '£' symbol was added to numerical values at corners. These changes made to reflect the end of the fixed exchange rate of par between the Irish Pound (Punt) and British Pound Sterling that took place in March 1979. A Thomas De La Rue engraving and printing but without imprint and in brown on multicolour featuring a statue of Hibernia at right and the well-recognized for the Bank - Medusa head at left with the row of the same head at upper centre with the exception that its now featured in the underprint. The reverse with various illustrations representing industry at centre of which is the Bank's building along with the Short Belfast - the heavy lift turboprop freighter plane with only 10 aircraft constructed, textile and thread rolls and the passenger ocean liner SS Canberra. An amazing 250 metre and 17 million Pounds liner that was named after the federal capital of Australia, Canberra and sponsored by the Dame Pattie Menzies, GBE, wife of the then Prime Minister of Australia - Robert Menzies. The ship entered service in 1961 and made her maiden voyage starting in June, operating on the combined P&O-Orient Line service between the United Kingdom and Australasia. So popular, the ship appeared in the 1971 James Bond film Diamonds Are Forever and in 1997 Gerard Kenny released the single "Farewell Canberra" which was specially composed for the last voyage, before it was withdrawn and sold to ship breakers for scrapping, and left for Gadani ship-breaking yard in Pakistan. Being such a solid construction, the scrapping process took a year instead of the planned 3 months. The ship also served as a troopship in the Falklands War being requisitioned by the MOD and quickly refitted for the purpose she sailed on 9th April 1982 travelling 9,000 nautical miles (17,000 km) away from the UK mainland and being put in the heart of the conflict she was nicknamed the Great White Whale.

Ireland Penny Token 1800 or 1822 34mm diameter, 14.19 grammes Obverse : Bust George III right, laureate and draped, ONE PENNY TOKEN. Reverse : Hibernia seated right holding a sprig of shamrock, the 00 of the date slanted to the right. IRELAND. The lower part of the date is worn, and examination of archive pictures of a similar piece suggest this may be 1822. Edge slant-milled with raised centre line. Die Axis inverted. Davis 37 Struck from very worn dies, causing much of the legend to be missing, the detail that remains around Fine. Listed as RRR by Withers and as R by Davis. Cataloguer's Note: Davis states that this is a forgery of the time, as Hibernia is seated to the right. This can be no doubt that these pieces were struck much later as the style of the reverse is similar to the British Pennies of 1825 onwards. This would suggest that 1822 is the more likely date for this piece. There also exists an example 'post-dated' 1827.
