Medals - Ardennes - Sedan region 1644 Manufacture of Dijonval, 37mm diameter octagonal in silver, 20.62 grammes, Reverse: a draped female figure seated to the left, on bundles of woollen cloth, on one reads LAINE D'ESPAGNE ( Wool). Her right hand rests upon the handle of a bladed tool with the blade touching the ground, her left hand holding a skein of wool placed on her knee, in the left field the front of a galloping horse, with a seascape behind with three ships under sail. In exergue: MANUFACTURE PAIGNON / ETABLIE EN 1644. The obverse a large ornate P within a wreath of oak leaves and olive branches Near EF with attractive peripl golden toning. Our research has found that the copper version is listed as rare, and that a silver example exists in the Museum of Ardenne in Charleville-Mezieres. A most interesting piece of pre-indus heritage. Cataloguers Note: Cloth-ma has taken place in Sedan since the 16th Century and developed under the influence of refugees. The Dijonval factory near Sedan was created in 1646 by Nicolas Cadeau, and until 1666 they were the only manufacturers of fine sheets in France. In 1711 Dijonval was bought by Paignon who expanded the factory that would continue to be used until the 20th Century. In it's heyday in the 18th Century, the factory employed around 14,000 people, including 10,000 in the countryside weaving and spinning wool.

English Coins 1685 S.3401 UNC retaining much original mint lustre and with a peripheral light tone. Very attractive and fully struck, vastly superior in grade and strike than the Jacob.Y.Terner example (Ex-Bridgewater House collection), which graded NGC MS63, described as 'mint fresh and beautiful', and realised $18,400 at Ira and Larry Goldbergs Auction in 2003 (Lot 20), similar in quality to the illustration on page 9 of the Bentley Collection catalogue detailing the history of the and it predecessors. A truly stunning example of this rare two-year type, and seldom offered in any grade, perhaps one of the finest examples extant. The elephant and castle was the emblem of the Royal African company, founded in 1660 as the Company of Royal Adventurers Trading in Africa. This organisation held a monopoly on trade along the West African coast. In 1667 the original company collapsed but later merged with the Gambian Merchants Company to become in 1672 the Royal African Company. Trading was chiefly in gold and silver, and sadly for several decades, human slaves
