Sir Ernest Musgrave Harvey became the 17th Chief Cashier on the 6th May 1918 just as the end of World War I was approaching. The inflation caused during the war meant that demand for banknotes increased during Mr Harvey's time in office. Sir Harvey was knighted in 1920 and created a Baronet in 1933, among his other honours which were the CBE, Chavlier of the Legion of Honour and Chavlier of Leopold of Belgium.

A very attractive and eye-catching design mainly in violet on multicolour underprint with the obverse featuring a portrait of Lord Cockburn one of the Bank's first Directors at upper right and Allegorical female bust at lower centre flanked by thistle plants and 2 Allegorical figures representing Agriculture and Maritime shipping. The reverse in violet featuring a large panel with the Bank's Coat of Arms with a seated Maritime Allegorical female figure on top and flanked by 2 Griffins and thistle plants. Printed by Bradbury, Wilkinson & Co. Ld. New Malden, Surrey, England imprinted in small script at lower centre obverse and watermarked with the same female bust as on obverse. A presentable GVF example of the very last issue for the bank just before the merger with the National.
