Order of the Dogwood - Province of British Columbia, Canada awarded to The Rt.Hon. Sir Robert Bellinger, Lord Mayor of London 1966. 55mm diameter, 101.37 grammes of 10 carat gold, along with 18mm 10 Carat gold miniature. Obverse: The image of the Dogwood flower, Reverse: Provincial Coat of Arms. UNC, inscribed to the recipient in a presentation box, and accompanied by a 10 carat gold miniature similar in design. The predecessor to the Order of the Dogwood, called the Dogwood medallion was created by the provincial government in 1958 to mark the Centennial of the establishment of the Colony of British Columbia. In turn, the Order of the Dogwood was created by Order in Council during a provincial cabinet meeting held at Fort Langley on November 19th 1966 to mark the centennial of the union of the Colony of British Columbia with the Colony of Vancouver Island. At the conclusion of the meeting Lieutenant Governor George Pearkes (who was a future recipient of the honour) gave consent to the creation of the honour, then presented at the Douglas Day dinner that followed. The honour was then presented to the first 5 recipients:- Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, Viscount Amory (Governor of the Hudson Bay Company), Sir Robert Bellinger, Clarence Wallace, and Frank Mackenzie Ross. Mackenzie and Ross were present for the ceremony. The Order of the Dogwood was the highest provincial honour until 1989, when it was replaced by the Order of British Columbia. Other recipients of the award include Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Philip, The Princess Royal (Princess Anne), and Princess Alexandra. The last recipient was Terry Fox (Canadian Athlete, humanitarian and cancer research activist) in 1980. Only 13 people have been awarded the Order of the Dogwood, and as the award was replaced in 1989 by the Order of British Columbia, there will be no future recipients. Sir Robert was a controversial London Mayor in 1966-1967 and was a stalwart of the Nation Savings movement. His time as Mayor from 1966-1967 coincided with the HaroldWilson Government which was eager to blame the City for the nation's economic woes. Rather than confine himself to ceremonial duties, Bellinger responded firmly on the City's behalf emphasising it's contributions through invisible earnings. He protested again when the Labour Government in October 1974 decided to abolish the 10 Pence savings stamp. Although the stamps paid no interest and was costly to administer it attracted £120 million a year from schoolchildren, housewives and factory workers. Bellinger hailed it as 'the grass roots of savings activity in this country'. He was appointed one of Her Majesty's lieutenants for the City in 1976, was also a trustee for St. Paul's cathedral and Chairman of the City of London's Freemans school. Bellinger had previously been knighted in 1964 and appointed GBE in 1967 He was Gentleman Usher of the Purple Rod (a role akin to treasurer) of the Order of the British Empire, and also held decorations from Belgium, Greece, Cameroon and Denmark. In his later years, Sir Robert became a director of Arsenal Football Club and was elected life president of the club in 1997. He died in July 2002. Sovereign 1872M 2 over 1 Shield Reverse, Marsh 59A, Fine/Good Fine and rated R4 by Marsh with 15-25 examples believed to exist, making this the scarcest date/die combination in the Melbourne Young Head Shield Series. The overdate is visible over the top of the 2 with the base of the underlying 1 forming part of the base of the 2. An example of the type is shown in Marsh 2000 page 64 (scanning electron microscope picture). Cataloguers Note: The mint was opened on 12 June 1872 by the Governor and Viscountess Canterbury. This was somewhat later than planned; it had ordered and paid for dies to strike coins dated 1871. It was initially manned by volunteers from the Royal Engineers who had undertaken special training in London. They were under the command of Colonel Edward Ward who had already great experience with opening a mint in Australia as he had been in charge of the original team at the Sydney Mint in 1855. This variety arose due to the dies sent from London only averaging 8000 impressions, whereas the reverse dies were averaging 14,000 impressions, therefore by September 1872 some of the 1871 obverse dies had to be altered. A local engraver Julius Hogarth was employed and carried out the work.

Sovereign 1872M 2 over 1 Shield Reverse, Marsh 59A, Good Fine/VF and rated R4 by Marsh with 15-25 examples believed to exist, making this the scarcest date/die combination in the Melbourne Young Head Shield Series. The overdate is visible over the top of the 2 with the base of the underlying 1 forming part of the base of the 2. This example shows a die crack through the 1 running from the rim, through the date, and ending on the truncation between the W.W. . An example of the type is shown in Marsh 2000 page 64 (scanning electron microscope picture). Cataloguers Note: The mint was opened on 12 June 1872 by the Governor and Viscountess Canterbury. This was somewhat later than planned; it had ordered and paid for dies to strike coins dated 1871. It was initially manned by volunteers from the Royal Engineers who had undertaken special training in London. They were under the command of Colonel Edward Ward who had already great experience with opening a mint in Australia as he had been in charge of the original team at the Sydney Mint in 1855. This variety arose due to the dies sent from London only averaging 8000 impressions, whereas the reverse dies were averaging 14,000 impressions, therefore by September 1872 some of the 1871 obverse dies had to be altered. A local engraver Julius Hogarth was employed and carried out the work.

Crown 1821 Uniface trials or electrotypes for both sides of the coin, the reverse slightly convex, struck in silver; The reverse displays a small raised dot on the horse's breast, This ties in with ESC 262 (page 33 1992 edition) which states:- 'a small dot on the horse's body' which 'has not yet been removed' Rayner is referring to a plain edge coin minted the following year exhibiting the same characteristics as this piece. The reverse also missing the streamer, this also referred to in Linecar & Stone 6 on a copper trial (Page 57) where it is stated 'This would appear to be an artist's trial the check the erasion of the streamer' We also note some raised dots on the King's portrait, this would appear to be an intermediate pattern whose design was adopted, albeit with some changes, on the 1821-1822 Currency issues, Both sides NEF with matching dark grey tone, and both sides with full edge inscription as on the currency 1821 issue, an interesting insight into the progression on artists types 1820-1822. Fifty Pence, The London 2012 50p Gold Proof Piedfort Olympic Gold Medal Winners Set, a spectacular 11 coin set featuring the 11 sports that Team GB won their 29 medals in. Proof FDC with certificate number 2 (NO. 02 embossed in gold on the wooden lid) housed in a quality cabinet style wooden presentation box with a separate draw for the certificate and CD (unopened), and a CHIEF ENGRAVER MASTER PROOFS presentation card which shows the engraver's master proofs embossed in gold, the whole with outer card box. This is a rare set and must be The Holy Grail certainly of 50p sets and perhaps of the entire Royal Mint modern series since 1979. Some ambiguity has surrounded the mintages of these coins as the first time they appeared in The Coins of England reference book by Spink it was stated that just two of each coin had been struck one for the designer the other for the gold medallist. Here at London Coins we have offered four individual coins since 2012 all different sports (athletics, cycling, triathalon and tennis). The certificate on this set states 2/29, however the vendor has provided us with actual sales figures (rather than mintage limits) that he has obtained from The Royal Mint which indicate that just 15 of these 11 coin sets exist and states the additional coins issued separately so giving the following total mintages for each sport as Athletics 26, Boxing 18, Rowing 26, Cycling 26, Equestrian 22, Sailing 17, Shooting 17, Tennis 25, Taekwondo 15, Traithalon 22, Canoeing 17 (therefore no Taekwondo coins exist other than in these 15 sets). These are excessively low figures and anyone with an eye to wealth creation should reflect on the current values of Royal Mint proof sets that include gold from yesteryear, sets with mintages of 150 (10 times more than these 50p sets) can realise six figure sums. As far as we could tell this is the first example of this set offered so preparing an estimate can not be done on past results, what we can say is that the 4 individual coins we have sold totalled £20,800 or over £5,000 per coin.
