Penny 1860 Beaded Border Freeman 8B dies 1*+B (R18) Satin 1 VF or better with some surface marks and uneven tone, we note the Laurie Bamford example listed as GVF and harshly cleaned sold for £1058 in June 2006
Two Pounds 1887 ProofPattern or Trial utilising dies from the small B.P. currency issue. While the 1887 Proof issues use this special die sinking, the proof offered here appears to have been produced from the small B.P. currency dies. All new currency dies appear to have had Proof counterparts created, often with one or two struck for inspection, archive or presentation purposes. This piece has some unusual features, namely, the flan is about a 1/3 of a millimetre wider than usual allowing use of a bevelled or satinised edge. This broad, flat and even edge is always characteristic of 1887 Proofs. The milling, uniquely, is concave, mirror-like and less thick, unlike the standard small B.P. currency piece. This is the only such example known to Peter Davies and represents a extremely rare variety. Approaching EF with some surface marks
Penny 1863 Open 3 in date unlisted by Freeman, Gouby 1863B, Satin 46, the variety confirmed by the 3 having a curved downward diagonal stroke, the 2003 census in the Satin catalogue states 6 specimens recorded CGS Fine 35
Penny 1863 Open 3 in date unlisted by Freeman, Gouby 1863B, Satin 46, the variety confirmed by the 3 having a curved downward diagonal stroke, the coin in Poor grade but with the date and variety very clear, the 2003 census in the Satin catalogue states 6 specimens recorded
Penny 1863 reported by the vendor as 3 over 1, the 3 certainly with evidence of an underlying figure above the horizontal bar of the 3, though the underlying figure unclear, unrecorded as such by Peck, Freeman, Satin or Gouby, worthy of close examination, VG
Penny 1860 with E of PENNY clearly struck over a P Satin 15 VF for wear with light pitting across the coin, the rarity given in John Jerrams book as 'handful known' being no more than six examples thought to exist. The census of the rare varieties in this book shows that up to 2001 only one other example had been recorded, one in Good Fine condition, and another in Fine in the Laurie Bamfordcollection has since realised £950 hammer price, so this current coin thus far the finest known recorded example, a very important coin in this series
Penny 1861 Satin 28, Gouby BP 1861G as Freeman dies 4+D with central cut fishtail, this obverse rarely found on the 1861 coins, lists at £750 VF in Satin with no prices quoted for higher grades, this example is NVF/GVF. Satin census report states only three examples recorded up to 2001, with finest listed as Good Fine, we speculate that this may be the finest example currently known. We also note that the example in the Laurie Bamfordcollection June 2006 was listed as Fine and realised £350 hammer price
Penny 1860 as Freeman 10 dies 2+D but variety with the colon after D:G: pointing left of a tooth rather than directly at a tooth (see notes on page 14 Satin's 'British Bun Pennies and Their Varieties' 2003 edition VF/NVF once cleaned
Penny 1860 as Freeman 10 dies 2+D Toothed Border but with N over sideways N in ONE Satin 11 a well-known variety rare in high grade EF with a trace of lustre
Penny 1860 as Freeman 10 dies 2+D Toothed Border but with N over sideways N in ONE Satin 11 a well-known variety rare in high grade GEF with lustre with a small spot by the E of ONE
