English Coins 1695 Elephant & Castle S.3459, VG, Ex-Jewellery, an extremely rare 2-year type, with the 1696 coin stated as 'Extremely rare' by the Standard Catalogue. Our archive database stretching back 21 years reveals that this is the first example we have handled. Further research has uncovered a coin offered at Heritage Auctions in January 2024, whose description stated that their coin was the first they had handled, and that NGC had only graded one (their) example. We note also that PCGS have only graded one example, so by statistical analysis alone, proves to be rarer than the Standard Catalogue would suggest, Guinea collectors will certainly be alerted to this rare opporty to own a coin of this type

English Coins 1850 with a 5 struck over the 8 of the date, a recently discovered type, NVF/Good Fine and extremely rare, the overstrike extremely bold and clear. This the same variety as the coin listed in the Bentley Collection (Lot 986), where it was stated 'the cataloguer has heard of only one other specimen extant' and that the Bentley collector waited 5 years to acquire his example. We note the Bentley example, described as 'Cleaned, Good Very Fine' realised £2520 in May 2013. In the light of this, there will be few opporties to obtain this coin for any advanced Sovereign Collection, and it may be many years before another example is offered

English Coins 1877 Narrow date, Freeman 90 dies 8+H (Rarity 18) one of the rarest and most sought after currency types in the entire Bun Penny series, almost always encountered in low grade, this example around Fine, and considerably superior to the example sold in London Coins Auction A129 (Lot 2034) graded LCGS 20 which realised £7020 inclusive of buyers premium. The variety beyond dispute and this example quite possibly one of the finest examples in existence, we note we have handled only 5 other examples since 2003, we also note this is superior to the example in the Laurie Bamford sold in 2006 described as 'Fair', hence a rare opporty for the advanced collector of the key varieties in this series

The numbers were scratched into the field during the mastership of Professor Thomas Graham (1855-1869) have been shown by G.P.Dyer to represent overall output in tons of bronze coin minted since 1860 (the higher figure) and output in tons of that particular denomination since 1860 (the lower figure) This is not the example pictured in Michael Gouby's 'The British Bronze Penny' - Specialised Edition (Page 49) but displays a superb sharp strike. A highly desirable piece of n bronze coinage history, as stated by Gouby there are only 2 examples known, this, Ex-D.W.Grey 20/10/1971, Lot 111, Ex-Seaby Bulletin, September 1974, item K162, Ex-Sotheby Auction 9/10/1979 Lot 257, Ex-Michael Freeman, and one other, the other example illustrated in Gouby's book being the Ex-Norweb, Ex-A.H.F.Baldwin example, described by Spink as 'Extremely Fine and attractively patinated'. A total of 34 'scratched field' bronze coins are recorded of all dates and denominations, made up of 20 Pennies, 7 and 7 s. English Coins 1887 , with the obverse displaying 14 Beads to Queen’s necklace rather than 13 on the standard currency and Proof coin. J.E.B. initials fully on the truncation, on the standard Proof issue they encroach slightly into the field. On the 14 bead coin there is a smaller gap between the A in VICTORIA and the following D of D:G: .This obverse as Baldwin's Bentley sale 8/5/2013 Lot 1228. Reverse: The P of the B.P. initials is poorly rendered, appearing more like a triangle. There are also no stops in between. The top line of the streamer on the helmet makes a smooth curve onto the next line down, whereas on the standard Proof it is distinctly separate. The 7 of the date has an extra piece protruding from the right of the horizontal stroke. The Reverse characteristics are similar to a reverse uniface Proof in the Museum, and had previously not been recorded before on a Proof or currency piece. UNC with prooflike fields, the design and legend heavily frosted. This reverse is as the Royal Mint uniface piece. Both obverse and reverse dies types are known, but until now, not on the same coin, and the existence of this piece links together the two previously known types. Comes with a comprehensive folder full of interesting data and research relating to this piece and the other pieces bearing the obverse and reverse die types and their developments and origins, along with many useful and important photographs. Also with authentication from Robert Matthews(ex Royal Mint and a recognised expert in authentication). Slabbed and graded CGS 75, a unique opporty to acquire this important and unique piece
