Halfcrown 1920 Davies 1672N struck in a hard nickel type alloy and weighing 12.43 grammes. There are 1924 trial nickel shillings, with a very rare example struck metrically weighing 5 gr. The 1672N Halfcrown listed here may also be a Royal Mint trial, when a complete elimination of silver seemed feasible. There appears to be an interesting 'privy' mark, introduced by a thicker down stroke to the 'D' of 'Dei' with the top serif of this 'D' being double struck. The border bead above is also oversized (wider). This would be an odd occurrence for any counterfeiter, especially on top of striking perfectly die-cut, but lightweight coins in this hard metal, and having excellent milling. a similar example was listed in Auction A151 6/12/2015 (Lot 2687, weight 11.92 grammes, realised £120 hammer price), the description then stating that only 6 of these examples were then known to the vendor Near Fine/VG a highly unusual type, in an LCGS holder and graded LCGS 15, Ex-Colin Adams collection

Shilling 1890 ESC 1357, Bull 3144 Choice UNC with a superb deep tone over original lustre, in an LCGS holder and graded LCGS 85, would make an excellent coin for the type collector, the large Jubilee Head type lasted for just 4 years, this a choice example, and the joint finest known of 30 examples thus far recorded by the LCGS Population Report. Shilling 1858 8 over 9, Bull 3014, Davies dies 3A, Obverse: upright of the B of BRIT points to a bead, 11 teeth between the A's in GRATIA. 8 over 9 in date, 5 over higher 5 in date, an unusual type, this confirmed by the LCGS Population Report which records only this single example. GEF or better and nicely toned, in an LCGS holder and graded LCGS 70. 1859 Shillings are the only date to use this die pairing, and with the overdate and overstrike on the same piece, these three factors make this an extremely rare coin. We note the 8 over 9 type is now listed by Bull at R4.

Halfcrown 1696 First Bust, Small Shields ESC 534, Bull 1014, UNC or near so in an LCGS holder and graded LCGS 75. While many of the Shillings and Sixpences of the Great Recoinage have survived in high grades, the same cannot be said for the Halfcrowns, which are a good deal scarcer in high grade and seldom offered. This lustrous and pleasing example is the finest of only 2 examples thus far recorded by the LCGS Population Report
