Joaquim Arcoverde de Albuquerque Cavalcanti (January 17, 1850 – April 18, 1930) spectacular 8 ounces gold medal 1906, Arcoverde was the first Cardinal to be born in Latin America. He was known as "Cardeal Arcoverde". Only three of these medals were struck one for The Pope in The Vatican, one for Cardinal Arcoverde and this one which was given to President Rodrigues Alves President of Brazil 1902 -1906. Choice MS65 graded and encapsulated by NGC and attributed by them with the provenance of Alves. So exceptionally rare and desirable in many respects the Papal and Catholic significance, the Latin American significance the spectacular size (8 oz gold) and design, and thought to be the only one available to commerce so unique to the general collectors market. Legend: "BOARD OF TRADE ROCKET APPARATUS". Reverse: A large royal crown centre. "PROOF OF SERVICE AT A WRECK". The Board of Trade owned the apparatus which was held at Coastguard Stations. Users could claim expenses from the board. The rocket apparatus was used to fire a line to a ship in distress. The line then used to haul over hawsers and the block to be affixed to the mast. Once fixed a breeches buoy could be used, hauled on a continuous whip line, to take off passengers and crew one by one. It was used by Coastguards but also by Volunteer Life Brigades and Life Saving Companies. The first of these founded in Tynemouth in 1864.Coastguards trained the volunteers in the use of the rocket apparatus. Engelbertus Sterckx (2 November 1792 - 4 December 1867) was ministered to the priest in 1815, became a teacher in the major seminary in Mechelen and pastor in Boechout (1821) and pastor's blanket in Antwerp in 1824. In 1827 he became Deputy General and in 1832 the fourteenth archbishop of the Archdiocese of Mechelen. On August 28, 1838, he was received by Pope Gregory XVI and on September 13, his appointment was cardinal confirmed by the Cardinal Board. On October 23, he was solemnly welcomed to Mechelen. This medal was issued on the occasion of this nomination.
