W.J.Fernie is shown as Stroke position. The final elimination trial for rowers for entrance into the Cambridge Boat Race Crew for the historic University Boat Race. This is the only time prior to the Boat Race that the crews race over the full 4 1/4 mile Putney to Mortlake course. These race were contested intra-University Oxford v. Oxford and Cambridge v. Cambridge to decide the final crews. The Race still takes place today, although the medal prize has been replaced by the award of sponsored clothing and equipment to the competitors.
