Comes with copy of India Office Library and Records stating record of , date of commission of rank as Ensign 13th May 1825, and Lieutenant 19th Oct.1836, also List of services - Posted as Ensign to 15th N.I. 1825. and Capture of , Ensign 15th N.I. (India Medal). Transferred as Lieutenant to 4th Extra (became 72nd N.I) from 19th Oct.1826, after his in 1832 to Margaret Maria Louisa, 3rd daughter of Edward Swift Broughton. After a period of furlough, from 10th September 1833, he failed to report for his return and subsequently resigned his commission on 3rd Feb. 1835.

Thorne & Sons was established in 1831 by Robert Thorne and was described in Harper's Directory as 'Whisky Distillers Blenders and Warehouse-keepers' based in Greenock where the company had it's main premises. Right Hon.Sir. J.C. Dimsdale, Bart., M.P., Lord Mayor' in gold lettering on the lid. J.C. Dimsdale was knighted in 1894, in commemoration of the opening of Tower Bridge. He was Lord Mayor of London at the time of the Coronation, and in 1902 he carried the Crystal Sceptre of the in front of King Edward VII at his Coronation. The 1902 Coronation Honours list was released on the intended coronation day on 26 June 1902, and announced that Dimsdale would receive a baronetcy. He was created Baronet, of Goldsmiths, Langdon Hills, in the County of and of Street in the Borough of Paddington in the County of London. In June 1902 he received the 2nd class of the ese Order of the Rising Sun from Prince Komatsu Akihito, who was received formally at Mansion House as part of his visit to the United Kingdom to attend the coronation. An interesting piece of Royalty-related history.
