Jersey World War II German Occupation 1 PoundPick 6 (BY JE6; Ros. 661a) issued in April 1942 and June 1942 ND with the prefix JN only and serial number 3008, an Exceptionally Rare note with only 11000 examples printed in Fine or about with minor expected wear on the edges and 1 tape repaired, a pair of pinholes at centre body and a very small corner piece missing to lower right. This is the highest denomination for these Occupation issues and with such low number of printed issues these notes were scarce then and are even Rarer now
Netherlands Indies Ministry of Finance / Javasche Bank MUNTBILJET - Small Change State Notes 1919-20 (3) a scarce early denomination set of the very first issues of these notes consisting of the very seldom seen Queen Wilhelmina portrait issues (2) both with the variety with the left signatures and title in the printing plate including the 1 GuldenPick 100a dated Batavia, 28th November 1919 serial number EW 068268, a pleasing VF - GVF. Along with the 2 1/2 GuldenPick 101a dated Batavia, 20th January 1920 serial number JK 066587, presentable aVF to VF. Both printed by the American Banknote Company and displaying that characteristic design look for their printing style of that period, very similar to their other prints as some of the Dominion of Canada issues from the early 1900's. Both notes feature a large portrait of Queen Wilhelmina at the centre obverse and the Netherlands Coat of Arms at centre reverse. The 1 Gulden with a classic black/grey look on obverse with a blue reverse, and the 2 1/2 Gulden with a dark olive-green obverse and a brown reverse. The lot also includes a 1/2 Gulden Pick 102 dated Batavia January 1920 serial number FZ 13922, VG this note of the second issues now printed locally by Topographische Inrichting, Batavia (Jakarta). These small denomination notes were authorised for issue due to the short supply of metal after World War I with denominations below 5 Gulden until a series of Exclusive Rights were brought to an end in 1922, with De Javasche Bank Act, and the bank's capital was increased by 50% to 9 million gulden which resulted in the bank being prohibited from issuing notes of less than 5 gulden, and all banknote designs were to be officially published. The same metal issue also arose later during World War 2 in the 1940's and some small denominations were issued again along with the invasion of the Japanese forces who also introduced their own Gulden Occupation currency.

These earlier French series notes incorporate various beautiful and colourful designs and are very hard to maintain and find in high grade due to their nature with not very thick paper and especially this example with it's excessively large size. Ochre, blue and multicolour with portraits of Ceres and Mercury, also serving as watermarks, at upper left and right obverse with 2 cherubs - with Cock lower centre left holding sickle and maritime at right with paddle and anchor. The reverse with a four various craftsmen figures - Mathematician/Astronomer, Blacksmith, Painter/Artist and Scientist/Alchemist, on a river scene backroad with bota and ships. This is a note from the very last and very short-lived issue for the bank as the merger between the National and Commercial banks took place in 1959 resulting in all outstanding notes being withdrawn therefore it makes it scarce and seldom seen especially in this high grade. GuernseyTreasurer of The States Post War 10 Shillings Pick 42c (BY GU32b) dated 1st July 1966 (2) a consecutively numbered pair serial numbers 20/W 2536 & 20/W 2537 both bearing the signature L.A. Guilemette titled Treasurer and the notes in lilac on light green underprint on obverse and the reverse in purple featuring the Guernsey seal on a guilloche panel. Printed by Perkins Bacon Limited London inscribed in small script at lower centre on reverse. Both UNC and very scarce in this condition and as a consecutive pair. After 1945 the Islanders had to rebuild their lives, the return of evacuees, especially children who could hardly remember their relatives. Many properties had been damaged through wood being stripped from them for fuel, the Island had an enormous debt liability, tourism was destroyed and the growing industry was damaged. The amount of scrap metal collected is now regretted. Rationing continued as in the UK, until the mid 1950s. Many traditional businesses, such as fishing and quarrying would not return. So the Islanders looked to other opportunities, the physical import/export of goods was difficult as the harbours were too small and freight cost too expensive, so control of trade was looked at, the right to supply Mateus Rosé to the UK was controlled by a Guernsey business and it became the top selling wine in the world. By the 1960s the Island had recovered, tourism was important again, the horticulture industry was booming, 500 million tomatoes being exported annually, then came the crash.
