World Banknotes 1 Waterston Essay/Colour Proof unadopted Reverse designs ND 1943, PMS 96 for type (5) all GEF, Exceptionally Rare and in different colours each ink numbered in lower centre margin as follows - No. 2 in Brown, No.3 in Olive-gray, No.4 in Green, No.5 in teal (blue-green) and No.6 in Blue. Each displaying the Bank's Head Office building at centre flanked by the Bank's Coat of Arms and value in each corner. In April, 1943 in advance of the Bank's 250th anniversary in 1945, the Bank started to consider redesigning their 1 Pound notes. A committee was setup and several essays were presented by Waterstons, until Stanley Curister, Curator of the National Gallery, was consulted and expressed a view that none of the designs were suitable and presented a whole new design with the Bank's Arms against a lined background which was approved in May 1944. These very seldom seen and offered for sale, so this a unique opporty to acquire them and will certainly do a great addition to even the most advanced Scottish s

A very handsome and eye-catching design mainly in violet on multicolour underprint with the obverse featuring a portrait of Lord Cockburn one of the Bank's first Directors flanked by 2 Allegorical female figures representing Agriculture and Maritime shipping at upper centre and Allegorical female bust at lower left. The reverse in violet featuring a n period scene of George street, Edinburgh with the Bank's building at centre. Printed by Bradbury, Wilkinson & Co. Ld. New Malden, Surrey, imprinted in small script at lower centre obverse and watermarked with the same female bust as on lower left obverse. VF and this is an example of the very last issue for the bank before the merger with the National.

World Banknotes Stanley Curister ESSAY undated 21st January 1945 similar design to Pick 97 (Calloway-Murphy BA 102b) serial number 8/Q 4233 signatures Lord Elphinstone for Governor and Craw for Treasurer black diagonally at centre. The note features a grey Scotia lion at centre, Great Seal of Scotland, Arms with s at left on obverse and reverse in Dark Grey featuring Arms at centre and value at centre left and right. In 1943 the Bank started to consider redesigning the £5 note. A committee was set up with a brief to examine ways of reducing the size of the £5 note and adding a printed reverse. Stanley Curister, the Curator of the National Gallery at the time, prepared designs for the printed reverse featuring the Bank's shield against a lined background which was approved in May 1944 after several variants were submitted experimenting with different coloured inks. The inks were produced by A B Fleming & Co Ltd, the long standing ink manufacturers for the Bank. A number of these essays have come on to the market, all in the reduced dimensions. This essay type seen with both the SPECIMEN and overprint. About UNC and Exceptionally Scarce
