01/09/2019 Auction 166	World Banknotes	Lot 150	British North Borneo 1 Dollar Pick 29 dated 1st July 1940 serial number K665072 signature W.A.C. Smelt. The note in black with a red guilloche at centre in the underprint and reverse with value in numerical and wording on a guilloche patter at centre on reverse. Printed by Blades East & Blades Ltd Banknote Engravers London imprinted in small script at lower centre on obverse and reverse. In a PMG holder and graded Very Fine 30. The treasurer Captain William Anthony Casterton Smelt born 29 September 1895 was appointed District Treasurer at Sandakan in March 1925 and assumed his duties on arriving in North Borneo in May 1925. He was appointed Chief Treasurer in January 1930 after returning from furlough and the chief financial controller a year later. During the visit of Governor Clifford of the Straits Settlements in June 1928, he was the acting ADC (Aide-de-Camp) or chief of staff to Governor Humpreys of North Borneo. Sir Hugh Clifford was also Governor of North Borneo from 1900 to 1901. In the New Year Honours of 1946, Smelt was granted an OBE in recognition of his services during internment in WWII, presumably at Kuching in Sarawak More banknotes like this	£460
03/06/2019 Auction 165	World Banknotes	Lot 1019	Scotland 1 Guinea The Royal Bank of Scotland First Lizars Issue dated 4th November 1826 signed James More for the Accountant and Archibald Bonar for the Cashier. Calloway and Murphy RB38. Vignette of Neptune & Britannia upper centre surmounted by crown, Pay Andrew Bogle or the bearer and an elaborate printed reverse. William Home Lizars the printer and engraver who prepared some of Scotland's finest banknote designs, was asked to engrave new £1 and 1 Guinea notes in 1825. There was already a family connection with the bank as his father Daniel Lizars had been a customer since at least 1799 and William himself had been granted a credit of £300 in 1812 'upon an obligation Sir Alex Jardine, Bart (his brother-in-law) and Charles Stewart Printer in Edinburgh being in place of one held by Daniel Lizars, Engraver here.' (his father Daniel had just died). Both the £1 and 1 Guinea notes employ a much more intricate and detailed engraving techniques possible when using harder steel plate. Lizars was at the forefront of these techniques. Both the £1 and the 1 Guinea for the first time for the Royal Bank have printed reverses. These 1 Guinea notes are the last to be issued by the Royal Bank whose minutes indicated that some 550 books at 400 notes per book were issued (= 220,000 notes). Issuance ceased in February 1830 after yet another forgery. The bank's records refer to Steel Plates No. 1 to No. 3, from which it is inferred that the original plate was re-engraved, perhaps in response to forgeries.
