Auction 183
English Cased Fifty Pence, The 50p Proof Piedfort Gold Medal Winners Set, a spectacular 11 coin set featuring the 11 s that Team GB won their 29 medals in. S.LOGS11, Proof nFDC, we note very minor contact marks on the , , ing and coins, all in the original packaging, so this as released from the Mint. Set with certificate number 13 (NO. 13 embossed in gold on the wooden lid) housed in a quality cabinet style wooden presentation box with a separate drawer for the certificate and CD (unopened), and a CHIEF ENGRAVER MASTER PROOFS presentation card which shows the engraver's master proofs embossed in gold, the whole with outer card box. This is a rare set and must be The Holy Grail certainly of 50p sets and perhaps of the entire Royal Mint modern series since 1979. Some ambiguity has surrounded the mintages of these coins as the first time they appeared in The Coins of England reference book by Spink it was stated that just two of each coin had been struck one for the designer the other for the gold medallist. The certificate on this set states 13/29, however the vendor has provided us with actual sales figures (rather than mintage limits) that he has obtained from The Royal Mint which indicate that just 15 of these 11 coin sets exist and states the additional coins issued separately so giving the following total mintages for each sport as 26, Boxing 18, 26, 26, 22, Sailing 17, 17, 25, Taekwondo 15, 22, Canoeing 17 (therefore no Taekwondo coins exist other than in these 15 sets). These are excessively low figures and anyone with an eye to wealth creation should reflect on the current values of Royal Mint s that include gold from yesteryear, sets with mintages of 150 (10 times more than these 50p sets) can realise six figure sums. We have only offered one previous set, this back in June 2019, we note a tennis coin being recently advertised online for over £7500.

World Coins - Republic Mint - Mis-Strike 1927 Memento with 6-pointed stars, Y#318a.2 a spectacular double stri with around 5mm of the lower half of the coin double struck showing a crescent-shaped portion of additional legend from 3 to 9 o'clock. The reverse therefore has an additional 'OF REPUBLIC OF', the top part of the coin having MEMENTO and the top of the obverse legend approximately half off the flan. In an NGC holder and graded MS62. We note a triple struck example of this coin sold at Heritage auctions in December 2019 described as PCGS - Genuine, AU-details Environmental Damage for $4560, this coin is of far superior eye appeal and grade, the error also is over a greater area of the coin and the double striking is more bold. A fascinating and incredibly rare error, in a series where minor errors are known, but spectacular pieces such as this must exist in extremely small numbers only.
