Solander first accompanied Joseph Banks on 's voyage around the world. He also went with Banks to in 1772. In 1773 he became keeper of the Natural History department in the Museum. The medal was struck at the Swedish in 1783 and dedicated to Joseph Banks by Klas and Johann Alstrӧmer. Banks's grandfather Jacob Bancks was Swedish and became a naturalised Englishman serving as a officer and as an M.P. for Minehead
