Note: Thomas Howard (1747-1791) who became the Third Earl of Effingham upon the death of his father in 1763, became known as a strong neutralist during the period of the American Revolution. A proponent of neither side, he disagreed with the rebellion of the colonists, but also with their taxation without representation. In his protest against any war against the colonies, he famously resigned his post – an act which later garnered him attention in the new country with the naming of a frigate after him, as well as counties in both Georgia and Illinois. JamaicaSix Shillings and Eightpence GR countermark, undated (1758) on Mexico City 8 Reales host coin KM#8.2, host coin 1758 Mo MM (KM#104.1), 26.66 grammes, Countermark and host coin both Fine and bold. A very rare issue, we note an example sold in London Coins Auction A126 9/6/2006 Lot 534 described as 'Fine with some surface marks and spots' realised £460 hammer price, this example considerably superior. Cataloguers Note: In 1758 the Jamaica assembly passed an act which provided that some of the new Spanish milled money should be made lagal tender and have a fixed value. £100,000 was proposed and to distinguish the re-valued coins, they were countermarked with the initials of the reigning monarch, George II. This succeeded in raising the value of the Dollar to 6 Shillings and Eight Pence. All of the new money, stamped or not also passed at this rate. Home authorities, on receiving copies of the local act, repealed it and the Governor of Jamaica was censured for exceeding his powers. Only £12,000 of coinage was countermarked and the project was abandoned in 1759.

Jamaica Government 5 Shillings George VI portrait issue Pick 37a dated 1st November 1940 and a very early date for this denomination considering its issue started in 1939 serial number C/43 56881, GEF - about UNC and Scarce in this high grade. The note in orange featuring a facing portrait of King George VI on obverse and the reverse in multicolour featuring Jamaica's Coat of Arms at upper centre, numerical value in guilloche panels at left and right and denomination wording in 2 lines on panels at left and right bottom. Printed by Thomas De La Rue & Company Limited, London, watermarked with a Pineapple plant and a very eye-pleasing note.
