Auction 153
English Coins 1701 Fine Work DECIMO TERTIO choice mint state with like fields, Ex Roderick Richardson and with his price ticket £75,000 "Choice Mint State" graded and encapsulated by CGS as 80 (UNC) so offered here having three companies (LCA, CGS and Richardson) concur on a mint state grade. In the 10 years since CGS has been grading coins only two other pre 1750 gold coins have an 80 grade those being a of 1725 and a Guinea of 1713, As for current market indicators Five Guineas in EF of can be seen on display at UK coin shows around the £45,000 marker and it was reported to us by the seller and an independent source corroborated that a 5 Guineas in NGC 61 sold at the March MSCF show for £78,000, the read across table compiled empirically by CGS collectors suggest that USA slabbed coins in MS61 average CGS 65 grade. Regardless of the technically grade and price this is a spectacular coin surely never to be matched for eye appeal and beauty.
