Challenger Expedition 1895 75mm diameter in cast bronze, by B. Rhind after W.S. Black, Obverse A knight standing left, points to the gauntlet he has thrown down, behind, an upright trident from which unfurls a ribbon inscribed REPORT ON THE SCIENTIFIC RESULTS OF THE CHALLENGER EXPEDITION 1886-95. Reverse: Neptune standing beside an oval-framed bust of Athena, left, and an owl. below, two mermaids display a ribbon inscribed VOYAGE OF H.M.S. CHALLENGER 1872-76, BHM 3487, Eimer 1797, 190.75 grammes, GVF, R.B. WATSON on the edge, Rare, with a total of just 120 being issued. R.B. Watson is listed on the World Register of marine Species website as the author of 'Mollusca of the H.M.S. Challenger Expedition', cataloguing many new species for the first time. The result of the voyage was the aforementioned report, which among many other discoveries, catalogued over 4000 previously unknown species. John Murray, who supervised the publication, described the report as 'The Greatest Advance in the knowledge of our planet since the celebrated discoveries of the 15th and 16th Centuries. In its passage near to Antarctica, it was the first scientific expedition to take pictures of icebergs. Brigade, British War Medal 1914-1920 R.M.L.I, First World WarVictory Medal R.M.L.I, and Royal NavalService and Good Conduct Medal Type (2nd Type Obverse) MNE. R.F.R. GVF-NEF. Pte.Edwards joined in London in 1909 and was sent to Deal Depot. He joined the 9th (Chatham) Battalion RMLI , and, as part of the Royal Marine Brigade, served at the defence of Antwerp in 1914, and was part of the MediterraneanExpeditionary Force in Dardanelles and Gallipoli (Feb 1915-March 1916).
