06/09/2020 Auction 170	English Banknotes	Lot 105	Cardiff Bank, Glamorganshire 1 Guinea dated 11th March 1819 No. R325 For Wood, Wood & Co. manuscript signed John Wood and Entered with initials that best judged appear to be N.J. or N.T. (Outing 418c), a pleasing and quite presentable VF with few minor pinholes and a minor inner split to left centre body expected for the notes age, however a very well kept example and an Exceptionally Rare denomination. In fact, from research over the internet there seem to be none offered in recent times and the only example that appears is currently displayed in the British Museum Collection in what appears from the pictures to be an inferior grade to this example. Uniface in black & white printed by engraver and printer Henry Mutlow, with imprint Mutlow fc. Ridflow Co. London and displaying a Cardiff Castle vignette to centre left. Henry Mutlow, engraver to the King, was born around 1756 and mostly engraved maps and banknotes beginning his career with an apprenticeship to William Darling. The note displays very clear characteristics as an embossed Revenue Stamp for 5 Pence, a red diagonal First Dividend stamp on face and a bankruptcy exhibition stamp dated Oct 22nd 1823 on reverse with a manuscript inked signature along with an inked numeral to right.
