France - Ardennes - Sedan region Jeton 1644 Manufacture of Dijonval, 37mm diameter octagonal in silver, 20.62 grammes, Reverse: a draped female figure seated to the left, on bundles of woollen cloth, on one reads LAINE D'ESPAGNE (Spanish Wool). Her right hand rests upon the handle of a bladed tool with the blade touching the ground, her left hand holding a skein of wool placed on her knee, in the left field the front of a galloping horse, with a seascape behind with three ships under sail. In exergue: MANUFACTURE PAIGNON / ETABLIE EN 1644. The obverse a large ornate P within a wreath of oak leaves and olive branches Near EF with attractive peripheral golden toning. Our research has found that the copper version is listed as rare, and that a silver example exists in the Museum of Ardenne in Charleville-Mezieres. A most interesting piece of French pre-industrial heritage. Cataloguers Note: Cloth-making has taken place in Sedan since the 16th Century and developed under the influence of Protestant refugees. The Dijonval factory near Sedan was created in 1646 by Nicolas Cadeau, and until 1666 they were the only manufacturers of fine sheets in France. In 1711 Dijonval was bought by Paignon who expanded the factory that would continue to be used until the 20th Century. In it's heyday in the 18th Century, the factory employed around 14,000 people, including 10,000 in the countryside weaving and spinning wool.
