The silver designs reminiscent of earlier, classic designs, The famed Una and the Lion from the 1839 Gold , the Standing Britannia from the I series, the Lion on Crown from the later and , and the Crowned Shield in Garter from the later Shilling and Sixpence series. The coins were among those stuck in the winter and spring of 1962-1963 as part of a group of coin struck for the 'Decimal Coinage Committee' which had been appointed in December 1961 to advise on the most convenient and practical form that a Decimal currency might take. The Chairman of the Committee was The Rt. Hon. Earl of Halsbury FRS, The Secretary was Mr. N.A.E. Moore, who subsequently became Chairman of the Decimal Currency Board. The Assistant Secretary was Mr. John Rimington. The coins were circulated at the meetings by the Deputy Mr. J.H. James CB. A truly spectacular and ultra-rare set, only 2-5 sets believed to exist. We can find no record of this set ever being offered in a Royal Mint case, indeed neither Freeman, Krause nor Coincraft mentions the existence of a case, so this set being offered as it is in the Royal Mint case very probably is unique.

English Coins 1867 , Davies Dies 3A with upright die alignment (similar to the rare 1871 and 1879 Proof issues), the Proof issue listed by ESC, Davies, Krause and Spink is listed only as a milled edge Proof and never listed as a Plain edge coin. Die Number 24, this number previously unrecorded on a Proof strike (previously it was thought that the Proof issues were only from Die Number 2) extensive research by the vendor over a number of years has recorded only 5 milled edge examples (all die number 2), and just this example as a Plain edge Proof, UNC and with an attractive grey tone, the high points with just a hint of cabinet friction, previously from the Bole&searchtype=1">Alfred Bole (Ex-DNW 16/3/2011 Lot 191), quite possibly unique
