Two Pounds 1887 Pattern from Proof dies - a very rare trial piece struck from a unique Obv. die. The legend arrangement is similar to the standard proof dies, but the 'BRITT' is now at its highest known point above the crown and the 'R' and 'E' of 'Reg' do not touch as on all other 1887 Two Pounds. The crown supporter has 8 small pearls, not 7 larger ones as on other Proof and currency types, the uppermost pearls, merge with the sides of the crown orb. The coin has a thin obverse rim, with the bust now enlarged to accommodate this feature, whereas the reverse has the usual and inconsistent thick rim. The '8 pearls' obverse remains an unpublished pattern struck from Proof dies. Recent research by David Iverson has theorised that no more than 350 of these pieces were minted, compared to a total reported calendar year mintage of 91,345 pieces , AU/UNC with some hairlines and minor contact marks, retaining attractive and reflective fields on both sides.

The silver designs reminiscent of earlier, classic designs, The famed Una and the Lion from the 1839 Gold Five Pounds, the Standing Britannia from the Edward VII Florin series, the Lion on Crown from the later George IVShilling and Sixpence, and the Crowned Shield in Garter from the later George III Shilling and Sixpence series. The coins were among those stuck in the winter and spring of 1962-1963 as part of a group of coin struck for the 'Decimal Coinage Committee' which had been appointed in December 1961 to advise on the most convenient and practical form that a Decimal currency might take. The Chairman of the Committee was The Rt. Hon. Earl of Halsbury FRS, The Secretary was Mr. N.A.E. Moore, who subsequently became Chairman of the Decimal Currency Board. The Assistant Secretary was Mr. John Rimington. The Trial coins were circulated at the meetings by the Deputy Master of the Mint Mr. J.H. James CB. A truly spectacular and ultra-rare set, only 2-5 sets believed to exist. We can find no record of this set ever being offered in a Royal Mint case, indeed neither Freeman, Krause nor Coincraft mentions the existence of a case, so this set being offered as it is in the Royal Mint case very probably is unique.

Crown 1935 Incuse Edge ProofESC 377A (R6 - rated 2-5 examples believed to exist, making this rarer in number than the Gold Proof issue of this date) The edge legend much less sharply defined than on the currency and specimen strikings of this year. Two Pounds 1887 Pattern from Proof dies - a very rare trial piece struck from a unique Obv. die. The legend arrangement is similar to the standard proof dies, but the 'BRITT' is now at its highest known point above the crown and the 'R' and 'E' of 'Reg' do not touch as all other 1887 Two pounds. The crown supporter has 8 small pearls, not 7 larger ones as other proofs and currencies. This coin has a unique thin Obv. rim, with the bust now enlarged to accommodate this feature, whereas the Reverse still has the usual and inconsistent thick rim. An unpublished pattern struck from proof dies with only a few examples previously noted, NEF with contact marks

Five Guineas 1693 Obverse conjoined busts of joint monarchs right. GVLIELMVS ET MARIA DEI GRATIA. Reverse, crowned garnished square topped arms, lion of Nassau in centre Elephant and Castle below the bust S3423. Edge year QVINTO in raised letters on edge, GEF rare thus, not far off in grade to our lot 857 in LCA 155 Dec 2016 which realised £71,500 hammer. But this piece, the Elephant and Castle variety, is usually more sought after. The famous Samuel King Five Guineas sale by Spink included their well researched analysis of Five Guineas offered for sale in a 40 year period and the 1693 E & C offered here had a frequency of 19 compared to 91 of the S3422 type (1693 without E & C below). Last year a William and Mary 5 Guineas of this same type S3423 Elephant and Castle below in MS63 realised $258,000 in the USA. William and Mary were spouses who reigned over the kingdoms of England, Scotland and Ireland. They began their joint reign in February 1689 after they were offered the throne by the Convention Parliament. James II (Mary’s father) had fled the country and William and Mary occupied what was in effect a vacant throne. They were the first joint rulers in England for over 800 years, although Philip II and Mary I had appeared on English coinage together. Mary was to reign until her death from smallpox in December 1694 and William continued his rule alone, until his death in March 1702. The reign of William and Mary was brief and their coins are relatively scarce, the piece offered here has a very competitive starting price and would truly be a bargain in todays market at the low estimate or in our opinion at several bids above.
Maundy Money 1999 a parcel of 7 sets and three Pennies UNC along with two Maundy Purses and in a wooden box with inscribed plate on the lid 'The Royal Maundy, presented to J.E.J.Walter by H.M. The Queen Bristol Cathedral April 1st 1999, 6 of the sets FDC in the original plastic, the seventh set and three Pennies, along with a Five Pound CrownMillennium and DecimalFifty Pence both reverse side up, set under Perspex within the box, along with associated paperwork from the Royal Almonry Office, a letter from the Dean of Bristol, Order of Service for the Maundy Ceremony and a photograph of the recipient meeting the Queen

Halfcrown 1868 Fair, one of the 'missing' dates in the Young Head Halfcrown series, accompanied by a Royal Mint letter, related correspondence, newspaper cutting stating that the owner refused £1700 for the coin the 1968, and photographs taken in 1968, the letter believed to be the letter quoted in the ESC stating that the coin is 'probably genuine', mentioned by way of footnote in ESC by Rayner in the 1992 edition, page 85, these pieces recently reported as unrecorded in the Royal mint striking records, Harrington Manville the famous US numismatist once pointed out to us these so called missing dates were most definitely not struck by the Royal Mint, and this seems now to be the popular opinion
Halfcrown 1693 ESC 519 beautiful grey gold tone and sharp fields give the appearance of a choice EF piece but cabinet friction to the high points perhaps warrant a GVF, the reverse better, very pleasing to the eye (lists at £2,500 in EF now in Spink)

Farthing 1860 Pattern in aluminium by Adolf Weyl. Peck 2170, Freeman 901, Obverse Young Head by Wyon, date 1860 below bust, within narrow beaded circle and narrow raised rim, Reverse 4 shields cruciformly arranged, crowned joined by arches with roses, thistle and shamrock in the angles. Shields are of England, Scotland, Ireland and colonial emblems of elephant, sea-lion and kangaroo on the fourth shield UNITED KINGDOM AND GREATER BRITAIN and FARTHING below. Only one piece recorded by Peck. The piece being offered here is likely to be the only other known specimen and if so is likely to be the Murdoch example from Sotheby's in 1903 (Lot 691). A highly important piece. UNC and lustrous with some surface marks and small rim nicks, with considerable eye appeal, Ex-Colin Cooke 11/11/1997 £495

Nicer than the Montagu/Nightingale specimen and arguably finer than the Terner collection specimen and the DNW sale 86 (lot 790 June 2010) specimen, which fetched £10,900 including premium

Crown 1935 Incuse edge Proof in .500 Silver. ESC 377A (R6). The edge legend on this type is much less sharply defined than on the specimen Crown of this year. The edge itself is sharper and gives the impression of being somewhat broader than the 1935 Specimen Crown. The fields are distinguished by a more mirror-like finish and display a superior strength of detail and strike. nFDC with a pleasant mottled green and gold tone. Excessively Rare and possibly the finest known example. Note: This specimen is superior to the E D J. Van Roekel Collection (lot 259) example sold by Spink (15.12. 2001) and considerably better than a specimen sold by Morton and Eden (sale 2.12.2009 lot 263) described as ‘somewhat impaired by past polishing, with minor edge bruises and surface marks, about extremely fine.? This last piece achieved an auction price of £1600 plus buyers premium.
