Auction 171
English Coins 1693 S.3422 Obverse conjoined busts of joint monarchs right. GVLIELMVS ET MARIA DEI GRATIA. Reverse, crowned garnished square topped arms, lion of Nassau in centre. Edge year QVINTO in raised letters on edge, in a PCGS holder and graded MS62, with Prooflike and brilliant fields, a piece with remarkable eye appeal, the bust and reverse design lightly frosted, retaining much mint lustre, must surely be one of the examples of this short series. At the time of writing, the PCGS Population report shows one example graded MS62+ and another at MS63 being the only finer examples. Across the entire series combining all Five Guinea dates and varieties, only 4 examples have been graded higher by PCGS. and in August 2020 an example dated 1692 and graded MS63 by PCGS realised $384,000 in Heritage, and is now being offered for private treaty sale at $499,000, and we can tell you that that the difference in grade between MS62 and 63 is negligible. William and Mary were spouses who reigned over the kingdoms of England, Scotland and Ireland. They began their joint reign in February 1689 after they were offered the throne by the . (Mary’s father) had fled the country and William and Mary occupied what was in effect a vacant throne. They were the first joint rulers in England for over 800 years, although Philip II and had appeared on English coinage together. Mary was to reign until her death from smallpox in December 1694 and William continued his rule alone, until his death in March 1702. The reign of William and Mary was brief and their coins are relatively scarce.

Below the whole allegory is a plinth carrying the words "VICT...TTANNIARM RE DEF"-Victoria, Queen of the Britons, Defender of the Faith. The reverse with an ornate panel and value at centre. An excellent example from one of the first Canadian Banks to issue their own banknotes following the success and the provided model of the Bank of , the very first Bank to issue any banknotes in Canada just following its establishment in 1817, and which in turn was itself following the model of the First Bank of the established in 1791 by Alexander Hamilton, the first U.S. secretary of the . Also, one of the most influential early banks which ended up in a "Bang" in 1866 after having setup close relationships with the government from the moment of its establishment. The first significant bank failure in Canadian history, with its shareholders losing all their capital, which at a time had amounted up to over three million dollars and the government losing another million dollars. Banknotes at the time represented the principal liability of a bank and were redeemable in specie, upon demand. The issue of banknotes was well received by the public and became the principal means of payment along with the fact that they helped mitigate the problems that were associated with having a vast range of foreign coins circulating with different ratings. This note is a bit of an outlier as although featuring Royal portraits and images to relate to Great Britain, the Bank chose to use dollars as their denomination in contrast to others circulating in , , , and that were typically denominated in s, s, and Pence. Online research could not find any of this denomination offered in recent times, with only a few of the lower denominations in similar grades that were so keenly sought after they ended up in the 4 figure range, and the only example that occured is currently in the of the Bank of Canada Museum and these early issues are very unlikely to be seen in much higher grades, infect the current SCWPM prices them only up to the VF grade. Such an early Rarity, especially in issued format, is certainly a 'tasty' find for any serious collector and will most certainly serve as an absolute treasure in their collection. According to an official publication of the Canadian Paper Money Society Journal Volume 50, Number 143 of December 2014 this denomination was ordered May 1861 in Sheet Numbers 34001 - 44000 and October 1861 in Sheet Numbers 44001 - 49000 and was in a total of only 60000 notes

World Banknotes - Banque Industrielle De Chine 1914-17 "Tientsin" Issue Pick S399 (S/M#C254-2b) place of issue - TIENTSIN ed in black, 2 manuscript signatures series B 1914 number 091838, the 1914 supposedly because of the issue date, however hand stamped with 25th October 1917 at centre obverse, in a holder graded Choice Fine 15 NET Ink Burn. This is an Extraorily Rare note especially in issued format due to the extremely successful note redemption rate nearing 100%, in fact its so Rare that the current SCWPM records this and the higher denominations from the series only as S and this is the ONLY issued example recorded on the PMG Population Report at the time of writing. A very attractive design as expected from Wilkinson & Co., London in blue on multicolour featuring guilloche panels with values in and English along with 2 statues of what appear to be Chinese mythological creatures at lower centre left and right on obverse, also the text at centre in a mix of English, and Chinese. The reverse in violet on multicolour with what appears to be an illustration of the popular Temple of Heaven in its methodical Confucian design. The temple originally served as a vast stage for solemn rites performed by the emperor (the literal 'Son of Heaven'), who prayed there for good harvests at winter solstice and sought divine clearance and atonement. Since 1918 this private domain has opened its gates to the public and is a poplar site where people perform daily taichi, twirl on gymnastic bars and sing ary songs. The Rarity of this note makes it a real treat for any collector and most likely to be missing from even the utmost advanced s. In contrast, online research shows none of this denomination offered with only 1 of the same type currently in the collection of the National Museum of n History and only the 10 Dollars denomination of the same type offered in recent times

These were Emergency notes issued just at the brink of World War I - Lord Atterbury, Controller of H.M Stationery Office and Sir John Bradbury, the Secretary to the met at his house and produced this design overnight. These were printed rather rapidly on simple Royal cypher and watermarked postal paper with the use of different numbering machines resulting in many varieties, along with the further increase in productivity by printing extra notes sideways on the sheet's margins resulting in another variety - the sideways watermark. English Banknotes s First Issue T10 Red De La Rue Dot in No. 5 Digit serial number issue 1914 series B/23 30179 and a scarcer type note with "P" of "POSTAGE" visible in watermark at top left above George V medallion, presentable Fine with small edge nicks and very minor pinholes to upper left, expected for the note's age. In 1914 just prior to the outbreak of World War I Lord Atterbury, Controller of H.M Stationery Office and Sir John Bradbury, the Secretary to the met at his house and they produced a design for these 10 Shillings and 1-pound notes just overnight. Due to no banknote paper available at the time except for the one in use for the notes of and for a rather rapid issuance of the notes simple cypher watermarked postal stamp paper was utilised. In addition to this, in order to increase the effectiveness of the productivity, a small number of notes were printed sideways at the edges of the sheets to fill the blank space resulting in another rare watermark variety known as the sideways watermark. In short, these watermark varieties are rather Rarer compared to the other notes as there would be a very limited number of them per sheet, on top of the fact that these notes are over a century old now with very few survivors seen nowadays. Therefore, this provides an exclusive window of opportunity for any collector to acquire this excellent example

English Coins 1866 Fair, weight 13.37 grammes, one of the 'missing' dates in the Young Head Halfcrown series, mentioned by way of footnote in ESC by Rayner in the 1969 edition who had heard of an example dated 1861 sold in a "Northern" auction in Fair in 1967 for £115. Reported as unrecorded in striking records, more recent opinion is that these are regarded as later forgeries struck around 1887-1890 from worn dies, as the head types are incorrect for the period

English Banknotes Bank, 1 Guinea dated 11th March 1819 No. R325 For Wood, Wood & Co. manuscript signed John Wood and Entered with initials that best judged appear to be N.J. or N.T. (Outing 418c), a pleasing and quite presentable VF with few minor pinholes and a minor inner split to left centre body expected for the notes age, however a very well kept example and an Exceptionally Rare denomination. In fact, from research over the internet there seem to be none offered in recent times and the only example that appears is currently displayed in the British Museum in what appears from the pictures to be an inferior grade to this example. Uniface in black & printed by engraver and printer Henry Mutlow, with imprint Mutlow fc. Ridflow Co. and displaying a Cardiff Castle vignette to centre left. Henry Mutlow, engraver to the King, was born around 1756 and mostly engraved maps and banknotes beginning his career with an apprenticeship to William Darling. The note displays very clear characteristics as an embossed Revenue Stamp for 5 Pence, a red diagonal First Dividend stamp on face and a bankruptcy exhibition stamp dated Oct 22nd 1823 on reverse with a manuscript inked signature along with an inked numeral to right. A unique chance for any British banknote collector to acquire this fabulous example

These were the last issues for this design and introduced the word 'STERLING' below denomination at centre obverse and the '£' symbol was added to numerical values at corners. These changes made to reflect the end of the fixed exchange rate of par between the Irish Pound (Punt) and Pound Sterling that took place in March 1979. A Thomas engraving and printing but without imprint and in brown on multicolour featuring a statue of Hiia at right and the well-recognized for the Bank - Med head at left with the row of the same head at upper centre with the exception that its now featured in the underprint. The reverse with various illustrations representing industry at centre of which is the Bank's building along with the Short Belfast - the heavy lift turboprop freighter plane with only 10 aircraft constructed, textile and thread rolls and the passenger ocean liner SS Canberra. An amazing 250 metre and 17 million Pounds liner that was named after the federal capital of , Canberra and sponsored by the Dame Pattie Menzies, GBE, wife of the then Prime Minister of Australia - Robert Menzies. The ship entered service in 1961 and made her maiden voyage starting in June, operating on the combined P&O-Orient Line service between the United Kingdom and . So popular, the ship appeared in the 1971 film Diamonds Are Forever and in 1997 Gerard Kenny released the single "Farewell Canberra" which was specially composed for the last voyage, before it was withdrawn and sold to ship breakers for scrapping, and left for Gadani ship-breaking yard in . Being such a solid construction, the scrapping process took a year instead of the pld 3 months. The ship also served as a troopship in the Falklands War being requisitioned by the MOD and quickly refitted for the purpose she sailed on 9th April 1982 travelling 9,000 nautical miles (17,000 km) away from the UK mainland and being put in the heart of the conflict she was nicknamed the Great Whale.
