Fifty Pence, The London 2012 50p Gold Proof Piedfort Olympic Gold Medal Winners Set, a spectacular 11 coin set featuring the 11 sports that Team GB won their 29 medals in. Proof FDC with certificate number 2 (NO. 02 embossed in gold on the wooden lid) housed in a quality cabinet style wooden presentation box with a separate draw for the certificate and CD (unopened), and a CHIEF ENGRAVER MASTER PROOFS presentation card which shows the engraver's master proofs embossed in gold, the whole with outer card box. This is a rare set and must be The Holy Grail certainly of 50p sets and perhaps of the entire Royal Mint modern series since 1979. Some ambiguity has surrounded the mintages of these coins as the first time they appeared in The Coins of England reference book by Spink it was stated that just two of each coin had been struck one for the designer the other for the gold medallist. Here at London Coins we have offered four individual coins since 2012 all different sports (athletics, cycling, triathalon and tennis). The certificate on this set states 2/29, however the vendor has provided us with actual sales figures (rather than mintage limits) that he has obtained from The Royal Mint which indicate that just 15 of these 11 coin sets exist and states the additional coins issued separately so giving the following total mintages for each sport as Athletics 26, Boxing 18, Rowing 26, Cycling 26, Equestrian 22, Sailing 17, Shooting 17, Tennis 25, Taekwondo 15, Traithalon 22, Canoeing 17 (therefore no Taekwondo coins exist other than in these 15 sets). These are excessively low figures and anyone with an eye to wealth creation should reflect on the current values of Royal Mint proof sets that include gold from yesteryear, sets with mintages of 150 (10 times more than these 50p sets) can realise six figure sums. As far as we could tell this is the first example of this set offered so preparing an estimate can not be done on past results, what we can say is that the 4 individual coins we have sold totalled £20,800 or over £5,000 per coin.

Penny 1864 Crosslet 4 Peck 1664 with 239/136 scratched in the obverse field, toned UNC with traces of lustre and a few small spots. The numbers were scratched into the field during the mastership of Professor Thomas Graham (1855-1869) have been shown by G.P.Dyer to represent overall output in tons of bronze coin minted since 1860 (the higher figure) and output in tons of that particular denomination since 1860 (the lower figure) This is not the example pictured in Michael Gouby's 'The British Bronze Penny' - Specialised Edition (Page 49) but displays a superb sharp strike. A highly desirable piece of Victorian bronze coinage history, as stated by Gouby there are only 2 examples known, this, Ex-D.W.Grey 20/10/1971, Lot 111, Ex-Seaby Bulletin, September 1974, item K162, Ex-Sotheby Auction 9/10/1979 Lot 257, Ex-Michael Freeman, and one other, the other example illustrated in Gouby's book being the Ex-Norweb, Ex-A.H.F.Baldwin example, described by Spink as 'Extremely Fine and attractively patinated'. A total of 34 'scratched field' bronze coins are recorded of all dates and denominations, made up of 20 Pennies, 7 Halfpennies and 7 Farthings. Of the 20 Pennies, 12 are known to be in the British Museum Collection, this being one of the remaining 8 available to commerce. An extremely rare opportunity to bid on a piece of Victorian numismatic history. We note a standard currency 1864 Crosslet 4 Penny in UNC sold in our March 2014 auction (Lot 1844) for £3978 inclusive of buyers premium.
Florins Elizabeth II Florin Engraver's Trial pieces undated c.1961 (5) each with TRIAL DIE on the reverse, the obverses with the standard early Elizabeth II portrait, the legend on each coin with a different typeface, with the type face abbreviated name raised in the field, i.e. Albertus (TRIAL ALB.) Albertus Light (ALB.L), Poliphilus (Pol.). Baskerville (BAS.), and Ionic (ION.) each coin UNC, comes with booklet and copy of original handwritten notes detailing each type face and the experiments conducted by the Deputy Master of the Mint into the suitability of certain styles of lettering for use in the design and minting of coins and medals, The set is accompanied by an additional handwritten note stating that there were originally seven sets made, these sets were then presented to the Queen for her consideration. One set had the handwritten note and typed manuscript, the other six sets, rather than having TRIAL DIE on the reverse, had plain reverses. This set is the original set, with a photostat copy of the folder from one of the six other sets which became detached from the coins. Comes in a large and impressive hard black case, originally purchased from the London Mint Office for £18,000, a wonderful documented insight into the processes involved in development of pre-decimal coinage in the early Elizabethan era
