World War I Medals (15) all recipients but one, either killed in action or died of wounds, awarded to the following:- 12112 Pte. R.Phillips 15th Royal Irish Rifles (North Belfast), VF. Pte.Phillips was killed in action in France 20/1/1916 and is buried at Miraumont Communal Cemetery C.1, 16887 Pte.P.Connor 8th Regiment of Irish Fusiliers. GVF. The 8th Regiment saw action at the Battles of Guillemont and Ginchy. Pte.Connor died of wounds in France 24/6/1916. He is buried at Bethune Town Cemetery V.E.75, D-9505 Pte.W.H.Allen 4th Dragoon Guards (Royal Irish). NEF. Killed in action, Battle for La Bassee 1/11/1914, buried Ypres Menin Gate Memorial Panel 3-5.Also entitled to 1914 Star and bar. 19056 Pte.A.Nicholas 9th Devon Regiment. NEF. Pte. Nicholas was killed in action on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, France 1/7/1916. Buried Somme, Thiepval Memorial, Pier and face 1C, 2052D Seaman J.Flynn Royal Naval Reserve, H.M.S.Goliath, GVF. killed in action off Gallipoli 13/5/1915, buried at Plymouth Naval Memorial 8. HMS Goliath was sunk after being hit by three torpedoes from the Ottoman destroyer Mauvenet-i Milliye losing 570 of her 750 crew, 29447 Pte.J.Mullen R.INNES.FUS 1st Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers (Mullan on CWGC). About EF. Killed in action in France, 19/5/1917, buried Arras Memorial, Bay 6. The 1st Battalion, which had been serving in India, returned home in January 1915, it was then landed at Cape Helles, Gallipoli, as part of the 87th Brigade in the 29th Division in April 1915. It was evacuated from Gallipoli in January 1916, then landed in Marseille in March 1916 for service on the Western Front, 2nd Lieutenant A.Bartlett Royal Welsh Fusiliers, NEF. Died of Wounds as a POW France, aged 32, 12/4/1918, buried Royal Irish Rifles Graveyard, Laventie Cemetery, 2nd Lieutenant A.P.Male Machinegun Corps Officer, enlisted 13th London Regiment 25/4/1911, commissioned 3/12/1915 NEF. Killed in action Bourlon Wood 23/11/1917 on the first day of battle, buried Cambrai Memorial, Louverval, also entitled to 1914 Star and bar with 13th London Regiment, 3665 Pte.A.Rhydwen, Welsh Guards, NEF. Pte.Rhydwen was killed in action in France 3/5/1918, Buried Bienvillers Military Cemetery, Pas de Calais XVII.C.9, 4474 Sepoy Kala Khan 58th Rifles. (58th Vaughan's Rifles, Frontier Force) NEF. Killed in action, Palestine 14/4/1918. Buried Heliopolis (Port Tewfik) Memorial. 4751 Pte.J.Dowling 1st Leinster Regiment VF. Pte.Dowling died of wounds in France 15/5/1915 and is buried at Boulogne Eastern Cemetery VIII. D.7., 8841 Pte.A.Mawhenney 2nd Irish Guards (Mawhinney on CWGC website). EF. died 31/7/1917 buried Ypres, Menin Gate, Belgium (Panel 11), 8890 Pte.F.C.Brown 2nd Kings Own Royal Lancashire Regiment. NEF. Pte. Brown was born in Ahmednagar, India enlisted in Winchester, UK, and was killed in action 8/5/1915 at the second Battle of Ypres. This battle is the first recorded use of poison gas on the Western Front, and over 300 men were killed in the last German assault on Frezenberg, He is buried ay Ypres Menin Gate Memorial, Panel 12, Capt. J.M.Fonseca R.A.M.C, First Welsh Field Ambulance, 53rd Welsh Division, served in Gallipoli 1914. NEF. The 53rd Welsh Division landed at Sulva Bay 8/8/1915, with only three officers, and after 4 months became part of the Suez Canal Defence Force. World War I Victory Medal awarded to 5-2688 Pte. J.H.Boardman 1st Royal Irish Rifles. VF. Killed in action during the Battle of the Somme (Battle for Ancre Heights) 23/10/1916, buried Somme, Thiepval Memorial Pier and face 15A and 15B
World War I and World War II a group of nine to Lieut. (E) Joseph William Brand R.N, HMS Gossamer 1914-1915 Star, World War I War Medal, World War I Victory Medal, 1939-1945 Star, Atlantic Star, 1939-1945 Defence Medal, 1939-1945 World War II Medal, Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, and Distinguished Service Cross, George VI (1942), EF in presentation box, comes with photograph and copies of papers detailing the HMS Gossamer and details of the naval career of Joseph William Brand. The HMS Gosamer was a minesweeper of the Halcyon class. At the evacuation from Dunkirk Gossamer made six trips to and from that port or the beaches and brought home 3200 men. In April 1942 the Gossamer left Murmansk with two other ships of her flotilla to assist the cruiser Edinburgh which had been torpedoed. Gossamer rescued 440 survivors. Gossamer remained in North Russia and on June 24 1942 was sunk by a direct bomb during an air attack.
