Fifty Pence, The London 2012 50p Gold Proof Piedfort Olympic Gold Medal Winners Set, a spectacular 11 coin set featuring the 11 sports that Team GB won their 29 medals in. S.LOGS11, Proof nFDC, we note very minor contact marks on the Boxing, Sailing, Canoeing and Taekwondo coins, all in the original Royal Mint packaging, so this as released from the Mint. Set with certificate number 13 (NO. 13 embossed in gold on the wooden lid) housed in a quality cabinet style wooden presentation box with a separate drawer for the certificate and CD (unopened), and a CHIEF ENGRAVER MASTER PROOFS presentation card which shows the engraver's master proofs embossed in gold, the whole with outer card box. This is a rare set and must be The Holy Grail certainly of 50p sets and perhaps of the entire Royal Mint modern series since 1979. Some ambiguity has surrounded the mintages of these coins as the first time they appeared in The Coins of England reference book by Spink it was stated that just two of each coin had been struck one for the designer the other for the gold medallist. The certificate on this set states 13/29, however the vendor has provided us with actual sales figures (rather than mintage limits) that he has obtained from The Royal Mint which indicate that just 15 of these 11 coin sets exist and states the additional coins issued separately so giving the following total mintages for each sport as Athletics 26, Boxing 18, Rowing 26, Cycling 26, Equestrian 22, Sailing 17, Shooting 17, Tennis 25, Taekwondo 15, Triathlon 22, Canoeing 17 (therefore no Taekwondo coins exist other than in these 15 sets). These are excessively low figures and anyone with an eye to wealth creation should reflect on the current values of Royal Mint proof sets that include gold from yesteryear, sets with mintages of 150 (10 times more than these 50p sets) can realise six figure sums. We have only offered one previous set, this back in June 2019, we note a tennis coin being recently advertised online for over £7500.

Cataloguers note: The exhibition was held on a newly-prepared site at White City, West London. He graduated with a BSc in 1867 and received a University scholarship leading to a doctorate in 1870. He taught Chemistry at Aberdeen and then went on to lecture at the Liverpool Royal Infirmary School of Medicine. He also taught at the School of Medicine in Liverpool. Campbell was involved in the creation of the University of Liverpool. He was also involved in water quality studies for the City of Liverpool Water Works. It was intended to hold the event every four years in Greece in the intermediate years between the Official Olympic Games, however, only the 1906 event actually took place. The games were groundbreaking in many ways. This was the first Olympic event to have an opening ceremony, a closing ceremony and also the first to have an athletes village. It also featured raising of flags for the winning athletes for the first time, these all continue today.

Five Guineas 1687 Second Bust S.3397A TERTIO edge in a PCGS holder and graded AU55. Flashes of red toning and lustre in the legends enhance the eye appeal of this impressive piece. We note an example graded NGC 58 recently changed hands in the USA for $78000 (around £60000). The example offered here displays only slightly more overall wear to the obverse and with a superior reverse. The piece offered here would be a worthy addition to an advanced early milled gold collection. We note this is now listed at £70,000 in EF in the Spink catalogue, compared to £22,500 back in 2014, so the catalogue price of this coin has tripled in just 7 years.
Shilling Isle of Man - Douglas 1811 Obverse: View of Peel Castle, no legend, within linear circle and toothed border, Reverse: Legend in 5 lines: DOUGLAS BANK TOKEN ONE SHILLING BRITISH 1811, Davis 6, EF and lustrous with hints of golden toning, with some minor contact marks, Extremely rare and a lot scarcer than the Five Shillings of similar design. Worthy of a place in the most advanced Isle of Man collection. We note the Neil B. Todd collection example was sold in 2015 and realised £1200 hammer price in a London saleroom, this piece slightly superior. We also note that there is an example in the Victoria Museum, Australia which is also inferior to this stunning piece

France - Ardennes - Sedan region Jeton 1644 Manufacture of Dijonval, 37mm diameter octagonal in silver, 20.62 grammes, Reverse: a draped female figure seated to the left, on bundles of woollen cloth, on one reads LAINE D'ESPAGNE (Spanish Wool). Her right hand rests upon the handle of a bladed tool with the blade touching the ground, her left hand holding a skein of wool placed on her knee, in the left field the front of a galloping horse, with a seascape behind with three ships under sail. In exergue: MANUFACTURE PAIGNON / ETABLIE EN 1644. The obverse a large ornate P within a wreath of oak leaves and olive branches Near EF with attractive peripheral golden toning. Our research has found that the copper version is listed as rare, and that a silver example exists in the Museum of Ardenne in Charleville-Mezieres. A most interesting piece of French pre-industrial heritage. Cataloguers Note: Cloth-making has taken place in Sedan since the 16th Century and developed under the influence of Protestant refugees. The Dijonval factory near Sedan was created in 1646 by Nicolas Cadeau, and until 1666 they were the only manufacturers of fine sheets in France. In 1711 Dijonval was bought by Paignon who expanded the factory that would continue to be used until the 20th Century. In it's heyday in the 18th Century, the factory employed around 14,000 people, including 10,000 in the countryside weaving and spinning wool.

Sovereign 1891S an unlisted type, Obverse with the first type legend with D:G: further from the crown, Reverse: Horse with long tail. NEF/EF with some contact marks and small rim nicks. Previously it had been thought that all 1891S Sovereigns were of the second legend type. This type unlisted by Spink, Marsh, McDonald and even the specialist DISH catalogue. According to David Iverson in his excellent publication 'The Jubilee HeadGold Sovereign 1887-1893' there are a small number of 1889S Sovereigns with the first legend (around 3% to 5% estimated.) this number decreases still further for the 1890S Sovereign (around 1% estimated). The discovery of this coin therefore updates the footnote in the Bentley Catalogue (Lot 706) where it is stated that all 1891S Sovereigns have the second obverse legend. An important coin in this fascinating series and sure to be of great interest to the Specialist Victoria Gold collector
