(285).The Sunderland Towage Company was founded on 1st August 1900 to own and manage the tugs formerly owned by a Sunderland Collier Company Messrs Taylor and Sanderson. The initial capital was £2,400 in £1 shares, this was later increased to £10,000, made up of 5,000 ordinary shares and 5,000 preference shares. By March 1918 William France, Fenwick & Co. Ltd, a much larger tug owning company of Newcastle, had acquired a large proportion of the issued shares. It is believed that the remaining shareholders transferred their holdings into a new company, France, Fenwick Tyne and Wear Ltd.
