Farthing 1679 Peck 530 Choice UNC and toned in an LCGS holder and graded LCGS 82, Ex-Andrew Wayne Collection, London Coins Auction A113 June 2006 Lot 739. Charles II Farthings very seldom encountered in this high grade. Since this coin was graded another 42000 coins have been graded, this has still to be bettered. It remains the finest known of 5 examples thus far recorded by the LCGS Population Report.
Farthing 1675 Peck 528 A superb and choice piece in an LCGS holder and graded LCGS 82. A well struck example on both obverse and reverse undoubtedly contributing to the high grade. The finest known of 5 examples thus far recorded by the LCGS Population Report. At the time of writing, 38 examples had been recorded, the next finest Charles II currency Farthing being graded 75, therefore this clearly a superior piece. A true mint state example with excellent detail and surfaces, very few extant in this high grade, would enhance any top quality copper collection, one of a number of high quality slabbed copper Farthings in this sale
Farthing 1730 Peck 854 in an LCGS holder and graded LCGS 82, a superb piece with the King's portrait and Britannia sharp and attractive, the finest known of 5 examples thus far recorded by the LCGS Population Report. All George IIYoung Head Farthings very desirable in high grade and are seldom encountered, this piece would enhance any high quality copper collection
Farthing 1839 FID: DEF. (missing top colon dot), First A in GRATIA unbarred, LCGS variety 10. in an LCGS holder and graded LCGS 82. A highly lustrous example, the obverse with slightly subdued colour, the reverse with almost full mint lustre. No fewer than 13 varieties of 1839 currency Farthings have been recorded by the LCGS Population Report and of all coins recorded of all the types only one piece has graded higher. Very few Victorian Farthings offered with this much mint lustre, would enhance any quality copper collection
Penny 1864 Crosslet 4 Peck 1664 with 239/136 scratched in the obverse field, toned UNC with traces of lustre and a few small spots. The numbers were scratched into the field during the mastership of Professor Thomas Graham (1855-1869) have been shown by G.P.Dyer to represent overall output in tons of bronze coin minted since 1860 (the higher figure) and output in tons of that particular denomination since 1860 (the lower figure) This is not the example pictured in Michael Gouby's 'The British Bronze Penny' - Specialised Edition (Page 49) but displays a superb sharp strike. A highly desirable piece of Victorian bronze coinage history, as stated by Gouby there are only 2 examples known, this, Ex-D.W.Grey 20/10/1971, Lot 111, Ex-Seaby Bulletin, September 1974, item K162, Ex-Sotheby Auction 9/10/1979 Lot 257, Ex-Michael Freeman, and one other, the other example illustrated in Gouby's book being the Ex-Norweb, Ex-A.H.F.Baldwin example, described by Spink as 'Extremely Fine and attractively patinated'. A total of 34 'scratched field' bronze coins are recorded of all dates and denominations, made up of 20 Pennies, 7 Halfpennies and 7 Farthings. Of the 20 Pennies, 12 are known to be in the British Museum Collection, this being one of the remaining 8 available to commerce. An extremely rare opportunity to bid on a piece of Victorian numismatic history. We note a standard currency 1864 Crosslet 4 Penny in UNC sold in our March 2014 auction (Lot 1844) for £3978 inclusive of buyers premium.
Farthings (3) 1720 No Stop after GEORGIVS, approaching Fine, with some pitting, unlisted by Peck, and not present in the Cooke collection, 1720 Large Letters on obverse as Peck 816 with B over angled B in BRITANNIA (as Cooke collection no.440) VG Rare, 1733 3 over 0 in date, with the distinctive die flaw between the II on the obverse (as Cooke collection no.410) VG Rare
Farthings (2) 1739 the first with the olive branch pointing to the base of the first N in BRITANNIA Peck 869 VG, the second with the olive branch pointing between the A and N of BRITANNIA and with the date appearing 1' 739 (similar to the Cooke Collection coin no.386) VG or slightly better, Rare
Penny 1867 with 542/329 scratched in field before bust Peck 1675 and listed as 'probably unique', Ex-Peck collection, UNC with minor cabinet friction and traces of lustre, these numbered Pennies seldom appear on the market, it is believed that only 30 examples of all the dates of Pennies, Halfpennies and Farthings bearing these numbers are in existence, and of that number, 17 are in the British Museum (Source: The British Bronze Coinage by Michael Gouby 3rd Edition 2000)
