Medals Of Ecclesiastic interest, Honorary Allowance for the Appointment as Cardinal of Engelbertus Sterckx 1838, Obverse bust left ENGELBERTUS • STERCKX • ARCHIEP • MECHLIN, Reverse: PRAESULEM / PIETATE • DOCTRINA • PRUDENTIA / ANIMIQUE • MANSUDUDINE • SPECTATUSIMUM / SS • DD • GREGORIUS • XVI / CARDINALIUM • COLLEGIO • ADSCRIPSIT / XIII • SEPT • M • DCCC • XXXVIII, UNC and nicely toned, the obverse with a few very small spots. Engelbertus Sterckx (2 November 1792 - 4 December 1867) was ministered to the priest in 1815, became a teacher in the major seminary in Mechelen and pastor in Boechout (1821) and pastor's blanket in Antwerp in 1824. In 1827 he became Deputy General and in 1832 the fourteenth archbishop of the Archdiocese of Mechelen. On 28, 1838, he was received by Gregory XVI and on September 13, his appointment was cardinal confirmed by the Cardinal Board. On October 23, he was solemnly welcomed to Mechelen. This medal was issued on the occasion of this nomination.

English Coins Oval on a Guatemala 1793NG (Nueva Granada) ESC 132, countermark VF, host coin EF with old attractive grey tone, over touches of original mint lustre with flashes of underlying gold tone, and choice eye appeal, a superb example of this rare piece, our archive database stretching back to 2003 show we have not previously handled an example of this type, probably rarer than the R2 rating given by ESC and Bull, Spink lists at £2250 VF for this coin with no price given for EF examples, , also, internet searches do not show any recent results for this piece, comes with old collector's ticket stating 'Forrer 1952 Seaby No.132 90/- Very Rare'
