Auction 170
World Banknotes The Bank of Upper Canada, York () Pick S2037 (Charlton Unlisted) dated 1st January 1861 Number 43552, a manuscript signature at lower centre right and with no observable , in a holder graded VF 20 this is a fabulous example of this Exceptionally Rare note. A collaboration of engraving by Rawdon, Wright, Hatch & Edson, New-York on plate patented 30th June 1857 and printed by the n Bank Note Company is the result of this fabulous note in black on green underprint featuring a young portrait of Queen at lower left, seated Britannia with trident and shield with the crest of Upper Canada at right, and at upper centre 2 Allegorical female figures symbolizing Upper and Lower Canada, which united in 1841, and a Lion and a , possibly representing , and 3 crests in the middle. The 3 crests as follows - lower left and right depict the arms of the Provinces of Upper and Lower Canada and the top - surmounted by a , shows the badge of The Order of the Garter, a clear reference to the monarchy. Below the whole allegory is a plinth carrying the words "VICT...TTANNIARM RE DEF"-Victoria, Queen of the Britons, Defender of the Faith. The reverse with an ornate panel and value at centre. An excellent example from one of the first Canadian Banks to issue their own banknotes following the success and the provided model of the Bank of , the very first Bank to issue any banknotes in Canada just following its establishment in 1817, and which in turn was itself following the model of the First Bank of the established in 1791 by Alexander Hamilton, the first U.S. secretary of the . Also, one of the most influential early banks which ended up in a "Bang" in 1866 after having setup close relationships with the government from the moment of its establishment. The first significant bank failure in Canadian history, with its shareholders losing all their capital, which at a time had amounted up to over three million dollars and the government losing another million dollars. Banknotes at the time represented the principal liability of a bank and were redeemable in specie, upon demand. The issue of banknotes was well received by the public and became the principal means of payment along with the fact that they helped mitigate the problems that were associated with having a vast range of foreign coins circulating with different ratings. This note is a bit of an outlier as although featuring Royal portraits and images to relate to Great Britain, the Bank chose to use dollars as their denomination in contrast to others circulating in , , , and that were typically denominated in s, s, and Pence. Online research could not find any of this denomination offered in recent times, with only a few of the lower denominations in similar grades that were so keenly sought after they ended up in the 4 figure range, and the only example that occured is currently in the of the Bank of Canada Museum and these early issues are very unlikely to be seen in much higher grades, infect the current SCWPM prices them only up to the VF grade. Such an early Rarity, especially in issued format, is certainly a 'tasty' find for any serious collector and will most certainly serve as an absolute treasure in their collection. According to an official publication of the Canadian Paper Money Society Journal Volume 50, Number 143 of December 2014 this denomination was ordered May 1861 in Sheet Numbers 34001 - 44000 and October 1861 in Sheet Numbers 44001 - 49000 and was in a total of only 60000 notes

With low grade and/or damaged Five Guineas realising £5000-£6000 in the recent past, this being several grades above represents very good value in today's market at the low estimate, or in our opinion at several bids above. English Banknotes Offered Here For Charity - VIP tribute s No. 5 note Merlyn QE II & Sir Edward Elgar B386 Series E Second Historical Series Foil Hologram & Windowed Thread issue 1999 and a First Run Low Non-circulation serial number AA01 000005, about UNC - UNC. According to Duggleby the lowest possible circulation serial number available of this Series E Historical Twenty Pounds before this offering is AA01 000031. This note from the Governor of the Bank of England in the original anti reflective museum glass frame with a note "From The Governor Of The / Bank of England / Note No. 5 of New Series 1999". It appears the note has not been glued in the frame and is held by precisely placed small holders with a small gap for each corner of the note to be inserted in. It has become a common tradition for the Bank of England to hold back the first printed notes with low or symbolic serial numbers when a new issue is released. Such notes are attributed to dignitaries, royalty and institutions that usually receive or were involved in the development of the new issue, for example Her Majesty the Queen traditionally receives the very first 000001 note, the Churchill War Rooms received the new Churchill 5 Pound note with the end of World War II year serial number AA01 001945, and the Cathedral received the new Polymer 10 Pound note with a serial number AA01 001817 marking the year that Jane Austen was buried there. A number of first run circulation serial numbers, the Bank of England is known to donate in Charity Auctions for various causes and many of these notes are very sought after by collectors and usually realise high figures as for example the very first possible circulation number of the 20 Pounds with serial number AA01 000007 realized £2,100, the first public available Churchill Polymer 5 Pounds serial number AA01 000017 realized £4,150 and the Jane Austen Polymer 10 Pounds AA01 000010 realized £7,200. In regard to this note the serial numbers prior to this one were reportedly donated as follows to H.M. the Queen, the Prime Minister, the Bank of England Governor and the Chancellor.

World Banknotes Seventh issue 5 s Pick 40b Law of 1947 (1955) signature Abdul Ilah Hafiudh serial number F011834 and variety with small head watermark, GVF - EF pressed Exceptionally Rare and widely collected. In red on multicolour featuring the popular thick lips portrait of II as an adolescent at right obverse. The reverse depicting an ancient carving illustrating Hamurabiy yatasallam al-sharia ( receives the Law), Hammurabi (at left) is in conversation with the sun god Shamash. Hammurabi was the King of Babylon between 1792 and 1750 BC and, although not one of the greatest of the Babylonian kings, he is known because of this stele which contains the code of laws. The illustration is adapted from the famous diorite stele, discovered in 1901-02, which contains the laws of Hammurabi . Printed by , Wilkinson & Co. This note is a fine example of the last issue for the National Bank before it became of Iraq. The Iraqi of 1958 lead to monumental change in the rule and administration of Iraq which lead to significant changes in the banknotes circulating in Iraq. Although the Bank's title changed in July 1956 during the last years before the monarchy was overthrown in 1958, the Central Bank's first issued notes were released into circulation on 5th February 1959 (for a full story see ‘The First Bank Notes of Republican Iraq’ in IBNS Journal Volume 44 Number 4).

World Cased Gold 50 Ounce Krugerrand 2017 50th of the first Krugerrand, with the '1967-2017 50 Year Anniversary privy mark in the reverse field. Proof FDC, a spectacular piece and the flagship coin of the 50th Anniversary series. 100mm diameter and weighing 1696.6 grammes. Of a total mintage of 50 coins, it is believed that only 2 examples of this piece are available in the UK, with the other retailing in excess of £100,000, comes in the large and impressive South Africa Mint box of issue, with certificate of issue number 36 of 50 issued, 294-page hardback book 'Krugerrand ' by Francois Malan and a set of South Africa postage stamps (3) International Small Letter rate each with Krugerrand coin designs 1967, 2000 and 2017 embossed onto gold foiling. The ultimate in large gold coinage, and by comon, dfs the recent One Kilo issues. A true status symbol coin, and a rare opportunity to own one, indeed our research indicates this is the first such piece to be offered at auction. Given the mintage and limited availability it may be many years before this issue is offered again at auction.

We note the Bentley example, described as 'Cleaned, Good Very Fine' realised £2520 in May 2013. VF or slightly better with very faint Pencil Annotation at upper margin and a tiny marginal tear at right but these not affecting the general appearance of the note and not extending into the design, the note in red and the obverse featuring an illustration of Aberdeen's King's College at centre and 3 Coat of Arms at 3 corners - top left is the Bank's Coat of Arms, top right is the County of Aberdeenshire and at lower left is the City of Aberdeen. The reverse displaying an enlarged Bank's Coat of Arms at centre on a guilloche panel. Printed by Thomas & Co. Limited London and watermarked with a bust of Sir based on the statue on Union Ter in Aberdeen by Sir William Stevenson along with the Bank's monogram. The North of Scotland Bank notes have been and always are keenly sought after by collectors due to their imperviously beautiful design. It makes this a very rare and desirable note along with the fact that this bank was the last of Aberdeen issuers, the relatively small quantity of notes issued and this being the last design just before the bank's identity was completely lost in 1950 even through the Aberdonian directors determined efforts to preserve their independence after the London-based Midland Bank acquisition in 1923. All these facts make this a very rare and seldomly offered note

World Banknotes Y.M.C.A. (Young Men's Christian Association) Herford & Bad Salzuflen canteen 1/6 Mark Token Voucher (Lothar-Weiß SU.9) for the English speaking Soldiers and Army in the area of Herford and Bad Salzuflen, after the end of World War II circa 1945 onwards. Printed in black on light red thin cardboard and uniface, featuring the Y.M.C.A. triangle logo at upper centre which was a well recognized and common sight during the war. Almost as soon as the war broke out Y.M.C.A. developed mobile canteens to bring refreshments to the troops. These second-hand vans painted camouflage green were first used in East London and by the end of 1940 there 500 vans in operation bringing refreshments to the troops, rescue workers and victims of bomb raids. At the retreat of , Y.M.C.A. red on the beaches until ordered to leave. The vans followed advancing and withdrawing armies not only serving mugs of tea but also selling cigarettes, chocolate, cake, hair cream, toothpaste and stationery. They also provided food and drink to those made homeless and hungry. They also had cinema vans and mobile libraries. The first YMCA mobile canteen landed on the Normandy beaches on 29th July 1944. Internationally, the World Alliance of YMCAs expanded its work with prisoners of war and refugees: more than 250 secretaries visited camps in 38 countries. The Y.M.C.A. was given ‘official establishment status’ – essentially given permission to operate with troops in all areas and particularly in front line positions which was very dangerous in these circumstances where the canteens became under attack and the men being wounded or captured. English Cased Fifty Pence, The 50p Proof Piedfort Gold Medal Winners Set, a spectacular 11 coin set featuring the 11 sports that Team GB won their 29 medals in. Proof FDC with certificate number 2 (NO. 02 embossed in gold on the wooden lid) housed in a quality cabinet style wooden presentation box with a separate draw for the certificate and CD (unopened), and a CHIEF ENGRAVER MASTER PROOFS presentation card which shows the engraver's master proofs embossed in gold, the whole with outer card box. This is a rare set and must be The Holy Grail certainly of 50p sets and perhaps of the entire modern series since 1979. Some ambiguity has surrounded the mintages of these coins as the first time they appeared in The Coins of England reference book by Spink it was stated that just two of each coin had been struck one for the designer the other for the gold medallist. Here at London Coins we have offered four individual coins since 2012 all different sports (athletics, cycling, triathalon and tennis). The certificate on this set states 2/29, however the vendor has provided us with actual sales figures (rather than mintage limits) that he has obtained from The Royal Mint which indicate that just 15 of these 11 coin sets exist and states the additional coins issued separately so giving the following total mintages for each sport as Athletics 26, Boxing 18, Rowing 26, Cycling 26, Equestrian 22, Sailing 17, Shooting 17, Tennis 25, Taekwondo 15, Traithalon 22, Canoeing 17 (therefore no Taekwondo coins exist other than in these 15 sets). These are excessively low figures and anyone with an eye to wealth creation should reflect on the current values of Royal Mint s that include gold from yesteryear, sets with mintages of 150 (10 times more than these 50p sets) can realise six figure sums. As far as we could tell this is the first example of this set offered so preparing an estimate can not be done on past results, what we can say is that the 4 individual coins we have sold totalled £20,800 or over £5,000 per coin.

Vignette of & Britannia upper centre surmounted by , Pay Andrew Bogle or the bearer and an elaborate printed reverse. William Home Lizars the printer and engraver who prepared some of Scotland's finest banknote designs, was asked to engrave new £1 and 1 Guinea notes in 1825. There was already a family connection with the bank as his father Daniel Lizars had been a customer since at least 1799 and William himself had been granted a credit of £300 in 1812 'upon an obligation Sir Alex Jardine, Bart (his brother-in-law) and Charles Stewart Printer in Edinburgh being in place of one held by Daniel Lizars, Engraver here.' (his father Daniel had just died). Both the £1 and 1 Guinea notes employ a much more intricate and detailed engraving techniques possible when using harder steel plate. Lizars was at the forefront of these techniques. Both the £1 and the 1 Guinea for the first time for the Royal Bank have printed reverses. These 1 Guinea notes are the last to be issued by the Royal Bank whose minutes indicated that some 550 books at 400 notes per book were issued (= 220,000 notes). Issuance ceased in February 1830 after yet another . The bank's records refer to Steel Plates No. 1 to No. 3, from which it is inferred that the original plate was re-engraved, perhaps in response to forgeries. About Fine with pinholes
