World Banknotes Ireland (Northern) Bank of Ireland Second Type C "Sterling" issue Pick 67b (BY NI.224b, PMI BA 121) ND 1985 signature D J Harrison and a first of the double prefix for this signature type and lower serial number AA 000115, otherwise this type starts at single letter prefix X with some stating even W 900001, a fresh and crisp UNC and very alluring in this high grade. These were the last issues for this design and introduced the word 'STERLING' below denomination at centre obverse and the '£' symbol was added to numerical values at corners. These changes made to reflect the end of the fixed exchange rate of par between the Irish Pound (Punt) and Pound Sterling that took place in March 1979. A Thomas engraving and printing but without imprint and in brown on multicolour featuring a statue of Hiia at right and the well-recognized for the Bank - Med head at left with the row of the same head at upper centre with the exception that its now featured in the underprint. An amazing 250 metre and 17 million Pounds liner that was named after the federal capital of , Canberra and sponsored by the Dame Pattie Menzies, GBE, wife of the then Prime Minister of Australia - Robert Menzies. The ship entered service in 1961 and made her maiden voyage starting in June, operating on the combined P&O-Orient Line service between the United Kingdom and . So popular, the ship appeared in the 1971 James Bond film Diamonds Are Forever and in 1997 Gerard Kenny released the single "Farewell Canberra" which was specially composed for the last voyage, before it was withdrawn and sold to ship breakers for scrapping, and left for Gadani ship-breaking yard in . Being such a solid construction, the scrapping process took a year instead of the pld 3 months. The ship also served as a troopship in the Falklands War being requisitioned by the MOD and quickly refitted for the purpose she sailed on 9th April 1982 travelling 9,000 nautical miles (17,000 km) away from the UK mainland and being put in the heart of the conflict she was nicknamed the Great Whale.

Tokens Ireland Token 1800 or 1822 34mm diameter, 14.19 grammes Obverse : Bust George III right, laureate and draped, ONE PENNY TOKEN. Reverse : Hibernia seated right holding a sprig of shamrock, the 00 of the date slanted to the right. IRELAND. The lower part of the date is worn, and examination of archive pictures of a similar piece suggest this may be 1822. Edge slant-milled with raised centre line. Die Axis inverted. Davis 37 Struck from very worn dies, causing much of the legend to be missing, the detail that remains around Fine. Listed as RRR by Withers and as R by Davis. Cataloguer's Note: Davis states that this is a forgery of the time, as Hibernia is seated to the right. This can be no doubt that these pieces were struck much later as the style of the reverse is similar to the British of 1825 onwards. This would suggest that 1822 is the more likely date for this piece. There also exists an example 'post-dated' 1827.

English Coins 1872M 2 over 1 Shield Reverse, Marsh 59A, Fine/Good Fine and rated R4 by Marsh with 15-25 examples believed to exist, making this the scarcest date/die combination in the Melbourne Young Head Shield Series. The overdate is visible over the top of the 2 with the base of the underlying 1 forming part of the base of the 2. An example of the type is shown in Marsh 2000 page 64 (scanning electron microscope picture). Cataloguers Note: The mint was opened on 12 June 1872 by the Governor and Viscountess Canterbury. This was somewhat later than pld; it had ordered and paid for dies to strike coins dated 1871. It was initially manned by volunteers from the Royal Engineers who had undertaken special training in London. They were under the command of Colonel Edward Ward who had already great experience with opening a mint in Australia as he had been in charge of the original team at the Sydney Mint in 1855. This variety arose due to the dies sent from London only averaging 8000 impressions, whereas the reverse dies were averaging 14,000 impressions, therefore by September 1872 some of the 1871 obverse dies had to be altered. A local engraver Julius Hogarth was employed and carried out the work.

English Coins 1872M 2 over 1 Shield Reverse, Marsh 59A, Good Fine/VF and rated R4 by Marsh with 15-25 examples believed to exist, making this the scarcest date/die combination in the Melbourne Young Head Shield Series. The overdate is visible over the top of the 2 with the base of the underlying 1 forming part of the base of the 2. This example shows a die crack through the 1 running from the rim, through the date, and ending on the truncation between the W.W. .

These second-hand vans painted camouflage green were first used in East London and by the end of 1940 there 500 vans in operation bringing refreshments to the troops, rescue workers and victims of bomb raids. At the retreat of , Y.M.C.A. red on the beaches until ordered to leave. The vans followed advancing and withdrawing armies not only serving mugs of tea but also selling cigarettes, chocolate, cake, hair cream, toothpaste and stationery. They also provided food and drink to those made homeless and hungry. They also had cinema vans and mobile libraries. The first YMCA mobile canteen landed on the Normandy beaches on 29th July 1944. Internationally, the World Alliance of YMCAs expanded its work with prisoners of war and refugees: more than 250 secretaries visited camps in 38 countries. The Y.M.C.A. was given ‘official establishment status’ – essentially given permission to operate with troops in all areas and particularly in front line positions which was very dangerous in these circumstances where the canteens became under attack and the men being wounded or captured. English Cased Fifty Pence, The 50p Proof Piedfort Gold Medal Winners Set, a spectacular 11 coin set featuring the 11 sports that Team GB won their 29 medals in. Proof FDC with certificate number 2 (NO. 02 embossed in gold on the wooden lid) housed in a quality cabinet style wooden presentation box with a separate draw for the certificate and CD (unopened), and a CHIEF ENGRAVER MASTER PROOFS presentation card which shows the engraver's master proofs embossed in gold, the whole with outer card box. This is a rare set and must be The Holy Grail certainly of 50p sets and perhaps of the entire modern series since 1979. Some ambiguity has surrounded the mintages of these coins as the first time they appeared in The Coins of England reference book by Spink it was stated that just two of each coin had been struck one for the designer the other for the gold medallist. Here at London Coins we have offered four individual coins since 2012 all different sports (athletics, cycling, triathalon and tennis). The certificate on this set states 2/29, however the vendor has provided us with actual sales figures (rather than mintage limits) that he has obtained from The Royal Mint which indicate that just 15 of these 11 coin sets exist and states the additional coins issued separately so giving the following total mintages for each sport as Athletics 26, Boxing 18, Rowing 26, Cycling 26, Equestrian 22, Sailing 17, Shooting 17, Tennis 25, Taekwondo 15, Traithalon 22, Canoeing 17 (therefore no Taekwondo coins exist other than in these 15 sets). These are excessively low figures and anyone with an eye to wealth creation should reflect on the current values of Royal Mint s that include gold from yesteryear, sets with mintages of 150 (10 times more than these 50p sets) can realise six figure sums. As far as we could tell this is the first example of this set offered so preparing an estimate can not be done on past results, what we can say is that the 4 individual coins we have sold totalled £20,800 or over £5,000 per coin.

World Banknotes Government Administration 1 Pound dated 2nd December 1914, serial number in red 008547, P1, 25 VERY FINE. An extremely rare piece, black on green underprint with arms at left on obverse. This is the first ever 1 Pound note issued in Bermuda and the only one to be printed by the n Banknote Company, Ottawa as the following later denominations were printed by British printers, mostly Waterlow & Sons and & Wilkinson & Co. In 1882, the local 'legal tender act' demonetized the gold doubloon, which had in effect been the real standard in Bermuda, and this left pounds, s, and pence as the sole legal tender. The British pound sterling then red the official currency of Bermuda until 1970. In 1920, 5 shilling notes were introduced, followed by 10 shillings in 1927 and in 1941. The 5 shilling note ceased production in 1957, with 10 pound notes introduced in 1964. It was finally decided to take the action that British had already done 85 years earlier. In line with the international trend towards decization, Bermuda introduced a new currency in the form of a that was fixed at an equal value to the US dollar. The new Bermuda dollars operated in conjunction with decimal fractional coinage, hence ending the pounds, shillings, and pence system in that colony in the year before it was ended in the United Kingdom itself. The decision to finally align with the US dollar was at least in part influenced by the devaluation of sterling in 1967 and Bermuda's increasing tendency to keep its reserves in US dollars. Although Bermuda changed to a U.S. based currency and changed the bulk of its reserves from sterling to U.S. dollars in 1970, it still nevertheless remained a member of the sterling area since at that time, the pound sterling and the US dollar had a fixed exchange rate of £1 = $2.40. The design makes it a bit of an outlier as it does not feature any royal portraits.

World Banknotes 1 The First Issue dated 4th November 1826 signed James More for the Accountant and Archibald Bonar for the ier. Calloway and Murphy RB38. Vignette of & Britannia upper centre surmounted by , Pay Andrew Bogle or the bearer and an elaborate printed reverse. William Home Lizars the printer and engraver who prepared some of Scotland's finest banknote designs, was asked to engrave new £1 and 1 Guinea notes in 1825. There was already a family connection with the bank as his father Daniel Lizars had been a customer since at least 1799 and William himself had been granted a credit of £300 in 1812 'upon an obligation Sir Alex Jardine, Bart (his brother-in-law) and Charles Stewart Printer in Edinburgh being in place of one held by Daniel Lizars, Engraver here.' (his father Daniel had just died). Both the £1 and 1 Guinea notes employ a much more intricate and detailed engraving techniques possible when using harder steel plate. Lizars was at the forefront of these techniques. Both the £1 and the 1 Guinea for the first time for the Royal Bank have printed reverses. These 1 Guinea notes are the last to be issued by the Royal Bank whose minutes indicated that some 550 books at 400 notes per book were issued (= 220,000 notes). Issuance ceased in February 1830 after yet another . The bank's records refer to Steel Plates No. 1 to No. 3, from which it is inferred that the original plate was re-engraved, perhaps in response to forgeries. About Fine with pinholes

The Turkish government the issue and arranged for another instead. All available examples were rescued from the sea therefore signs of salt water damage are to be expected. "There is no official recovery record of the 100 Lira notes from the wreck. They were not handed over by the Greek authorities to the Republic of Turkey like the 50 Kurus notes. It is believed the notes that escaped confiscation were also introduced by Greek and non-Muslim tradesmen and put into circulation in the smaller provinces of Turkey, where communications were poor. The variety of notes confused the public, who were not in a position to tell if the notes were legitimate or not. What is certain is these original notes are extremely rare. Only two pieces were reportedly seen in Turkey in the last few decades. The same is true for the note (P136). Not more than a couple has ever been reported. Although also very hard to acquire, Thomas notes remain the best bet for filling this historic gap in a bank note of Turkish Republic issues."
